Avenues oi fashion Alton Evening Telegraph Wednesday, Sept, 6,1912 Solutions to get the best from today's new fashions By CHIP TOLBERT An essential point to keep In mind when you're shopping for new clothes (besides what's in fashion, which you know if you read this column) Is whether it suits you. Which means not only not making you look bad, but making you look better. Here's a case in point: Dear Mr. Tolbert: Can a short person with a heavy — frankly, kind of jowly — face wear the high-cut, long-point collar styles? If not, what else Is available? — B.S.. Omaha. DEAR B. S.: The long- point collar (or, if you're looking for something newer, the long-point button-down) is the best collar style possible for you. Not with the extra- high cut, though, which will make you look as if you're strangling. And stay away from the new rounded points, which will tend to give you the appearance of having two sets of jowls. Dear Mr. Tolbert: I have a very small foot (7^B). Can I wear the big, blunt-toed shoe style or will it just emphasize the smallness of my foot? — G.G.D., Charleston. DEAR G.G.D.: Just the opposite. It will make your foot look bigger — much more substantial, say, than the old style poinjed-toe shoes that were once popular. Knowing what to wear can be either a gift or an acquired talent, knowing HOW to wear it is often something e!se again. Here are some solutions on how to get the best out of current fashion: Dear Mr. Tolbert: How should a sash belt be worn? — K.F., Saginaw. DEAR K.F.: A lot depends on what it's on. If it's something like a camel hair polo coat, its casual look is best served by simply ty'ng it once over lightly; unfortunately, though, if you move around a lot, it will slip and come undone. A double knot is more secure. And if you're talking about a shirt- suit, you can wear the belt around your middle or, if you'd rather, slung lower at the hip. Dear Mr. Tolbert: What's the best way to tie or kint a scarf? — B.McC., Nashville. DEAR.B. McC.: What you haven't told me is the shape of the scarf or scarves you're talking about. If It's a square, you can fold it in half (leaving a pair of triangles back of the knot), or you can fold it with two ends into the middle, making it long and narrow. In either case a simple double or square knot is best. If the scarf is long and narrow, like an ascot, fold H over once in the front; it will probably slip loose, though, so anchor the ends to the inside of your shirt with a small safety pin. Some of you are becoming quite' eagle-eyed about small details in fashion — which I think is great. Though they're often not wildly important in themselves, details add up to a well-dressed look. Dear Mr. Tolbert: What's the fashion significance of those little emblems like alligators that you sec on so many knot shirts? They're even turning up on women's Wool design in white This white wool design was presented for the winter collection by Paris couturier Feraud. The ensemble has crossed suspenders in the back with straps on the front. Wide pants, popular with the young generation, are worn with a red and white polo jumper with matching wollen hat. Galnesvlllle. - N. r,., DEAR N.G.: They don't have any fashion significance at all. The original alligator was the trademark of the knitted tennis shirts that Rene Lacoste, the famous French ace of the 20s developed for himself. Since they were very expensive shirts, the alligator was a status symbol, not so much a fashion symbol. A few years back, an American knitwear manufacturer acquired the trademark, which has been used on both their men's anJ women's fashions. And, in the meantime, a lot of other companies have picked up on such small symbols: one uses a tiny umbrella, for instance. And the manufacturer that produces tennis clothes designed by the Australian Rod Laver uses a little kangaroo as its trademark.
