Section B Pages Itol2 ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH In the military Alton, Illinois, Tuesday, September 5, 1972 SporU Classified Two Air Force missiles to be displayed here Hound Dog and Quail, two Important Air Force strategic missiles carried into combat by the B-52 intercontinental bomber, will be on display at Central Hardware Parking Lot, Sept. 23 to Sept. 27. The Hound Dog, with a range of 500 miles, can act as a palhbreaker through enemy defenses for the bombers, or can strike the primary target. Two Hound Dogs are siting beneath the B-52's wings. When launched, they can head for one target, then abruptly chance course for a different one. The missiles can be launched at high altitude, then come in low over the target. Or they can be released low, and drive onto the target from high altitudes. Powered by turbojet engines, the pair of Hound Dogs can also be used as auxiliary power for the B-52, giving it an additional 15,000. pounds of thrust to substantially reduce its takeoff roll. Powered by turbojet, engine, the quail flies at the same speed as the bomber, and despite its size — just 13 ft. long — it confus°s enemy radar by creating an image ^distinguishable from that made by the mother ship. One B-52 carries several Bridge for Quails in addition to a normal bomb load in its bomb bay, and two Hound Dogs under the wings. The exhibit will be open daily, and is sponsored by VFW Post 1308, 4445 Alby St., Alton in cooperation with the United States Air Force Recruiting Service, 655 E. Broadway, Alton. GIBSONS GIBSONS Today's George Goodc;i hand illustrates the loser-on- loser play. South is playing a very normal four-heart contract. It also looks mighty easy. If West holds all foiK trumps, South won't be able to make the contract because he has no way to avoid the loss of two diamonds and one spade. Otherwise, if left to himself, he can simply draw trumps and concede his three losing tricks. Unfortunately for this simple plan, the defense leads first. West opens the eight o? diamonds in response to his partner's diamond overoall and East quickly takes two diamond tricks and continues the suit. If South ruffs this third diamond with a low trump, West will ovemifi K South ruffs high, West will eventually collect a trick with his 1 jack of trumps. Either way, South will still have to lose a spade trick later on. What, if anything, can South do about this situation? He can use the loser-on- loser technique and discard a low spade on the thini diamond. This play leaves South in full control for the rest of the hand. Dummy is ready to ruff a fourth diamond lead and any lead allows South to draw trumps and make the rest of thJ tricks. (Newspaper Enterprise Asso.)
