&*l Alton Evening Telegraph Tuesday, September 5, 11)72 "Soivets expected to use more intelligence gathering ships By FRED S. HOFFMAN WASHINGTON (AP) Pentagon officials predict the Soviet Union will send helicopter carriers and more intelligence - gathering ships into the Mediterranean to make up for the forced withdrawal of Russian reconnaissance planes from Egypt. TU16 reconnaissance bombers flying from Egyptian bases had been used by the Russians to keep watch on movements of the U.S. fith Fleet in the Mediterranean. These planes reportedly returned to Russia several weeks ago after Egyptian President Anwar Sadat ordered Soviet advisers and technicians out of his country. Most of an estimated 15.000 to 18.000 Russian military men then in Egypt are reported to have left. But the Soviet navy still is using three Egyptian ports. Pentagon intelligence authorities say the Russians still are adjusting to changes and the possibility that the Soviet navy eventually may have to move ils base of Mediterranean operations. "Reconnaissance will be a problem for them now." said one Ppntncon expert. To deal with this problem, officials said, the Russians probably will augment the 50 or so Soviet naval vessels in the Mediterranean with one or both of (he Soviet Union's helicopter carriers, the Mosk- va and the Leningrad. Choppers from these vesse's could then patrol in sisjht of U.S. warships. and LeniiiL'rad ba^cd in the The Moskva normally are Black So,i In addition to helicopters. Pentagon officials said, the Soviet navy may add to the four or five AG1 intelligence ships usually in the Mediterranean. Af/ls. which look much like trawlers, are equipped v.'ilh sophisticated electronic 1 gear for sur- voirance and monitoring radio traffic. Meanwhile, U.S. intelligence sources said Soviet repair ships, submarine tenders, oilers and other auxiliaries still are moored in Alexandria. Mersa Matruh and Port Said. And Russian warships are beiris served in those Egyptian ports as before. Departure from Port Said of a Sovie' naval amphibious group in mid-August prompted some analysts to expect a Russian naval withdrawal f r o m Egyptian ports. However, intelligence authorities say that amphibious group has returned to Port Said. S"iiior U.S. naval officials say Syria is about the only country around the rim of the Mediterranean which might provide pori facilities to the IUh-s : :Ti navy if it finally is ousted from Egypt. But. while Syria has received considerable military aid from Kus-'ia. the Syrian government is said to be none too eager to provide naval bases for the Soviet Union.
