Macon Telegraph News Sun Nov 22 1987 football Vanderbilt whips Maryland for third straight win The Associated Press NASHVILLE Term Eric Jones hit flanker Carl Parker with a pair of touchdown passes and ran for SEC another score Sat urday to lead Van derbilt to a 34 24 win over Mary land The victory which upped Vander bilt to 4 6 for the season marked the first time since 1984 the SEC Commo dores have won three straight games Maryland closed its season with a 4 7 record the ACC first losing year since 1981 Jones who completed 16 of 25 pass attempts for 225 yards gave Vandy the lead for good at 10 7 with a 14 yard touchdown pass to Parker with 1:37 left in the second quarter The Jones to Parker combination struck again eight seconds into the fourth quarter with a 15 yard scoring play that boosted the Commodores into a 31 14 lead Vandy improved upon its halftime edge quickly taking the second half kickoff and marching 80 yards with Jones scoring on a 6 yard run for a 17 7 Commodore lead With 5:57 left in the quarter Vandy fullback Mark Johnson pushed the Commodore edge to 24 7 with a 3 yard scoring run 15 yard touchdown recep tion came three minutes after Mary land had pulled within 24 14 on a 30 yard pass from Dan Henning to Vernon Joines Henning and Joines connected for a 12 yard scoring play with 13:12 left in the game to move the Terrapins within 31 21 Maryland added a 28 yard field goal by Dan Plocki on its next possession to harrow the score to 24 with 9:12 remaining Vanderbilt then was able to take some time off the clock on a 51 yard drive that ended with a 39 yard field goal by Johnny Clark and a 34 24 lead The Terrapins killed another prom ising drive and their hopes for a vic tory when Vanderbilt linebacker Bob Scanlan recovered a fumble by Mary land split
