A bacteriologist is a scientist who studies bacteria, and Hideyo Noguchi was a great bacteriologist. Noguchi discovered the causes of several diseases, including paresis and Oroya fever. II« made important improvements in tests for recognizing some diseases. And he is most famous for his study of yellow fever. Noguchi was born on . November 24, 1876, in a small village in Japan. His father was a farmer. When Noguchi was a baby he crawled into a fire and badly burned his left hand. So he could never become a farmer. He went to school inseteatl and became an outstanding student. He couldn't afford to go to Tokyo Medical College, so his friends paid for him to-study there. Noguchi came to the United States and helped in a study of snake-bite poison. He made a serum to save the lives of p e o p 1 e bitten by rattlesnakes. Later, Noguchi joined the staff of the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research in New York City. He worked with the Institute for the rest of his life- and did research in the causes of many diseases. Noguchi went to Ecuador, Mexico, Cuba, Peru, and Brazil to study yellow fever, In 1928 he was studying this disease in British West Africa. He became ill from yellow fever and died.
