SPORTS WEDNESDAY ,2003 B5 MATTOON (ILL.) JOURNAL GAZETTE Parrish accepts job at Clinton 7 I -4 CLOSED NO I 2k Workers begin clearing the way for artificial turf to be installed Football field switch is championship," said Parrish. "We came close two or three years. Certainly wining the conference tournament three out of four years and finishing in the upper division the first seven years were highlights." Parrish began his coaching career at his alma mater where he was 76-54 in five seasons, including back-to-back 20-win seasons with the Eagles. The 1991-92 team was 20- 6 and the squad was 21- 7, the last time the Eagles had a 20-win season. That team was Parrish's most successful team percentage wise.

Parrish replaces former Sullivan coach Ted Turner, who retired after this school year. "Clinton is a bigger opportunity," said Parrish. "The key factor was the financial aspect, the facilities and they are building a new junior high." As for Areola Parrish said, "My hope is a coach comes in with his own personality and energy to get the program to the next level." The fact that Clinton is close to home didn't play into the decision much said Parrish, who coached for two years as an assistant coach at Prairie Central before taking the Deland job. "It had little bearing on the decision," said Parrish. "We like the area, but it was not a key." Clinton is a member of the Okaw Valley Conference as are two area schools in Sullivan and Shelbyville.

"This gives me a chance to try and develop a program from scratch with my own thumbprint on it," said Parrish. "I really feel that the program can be a winner year-in and year-out with enrollment and facilities it can be a winning program consistently. My intention is do just that." Parrish coached the Purple Riders for a decade, having been hired at Areola on August 9, 1993 to replace Dale Skelton. Parrish was also the boys' athletic's director and taught physcial education as well as driver's education. Parrish was also the junior high boys' track coach. "We labored over the decision for several days," said Parrish, a graduate of Deland-Weldon High School.

"It was an extremely emotional decision. I have enjoyed Areola and still do. We love the town and have had a great 10 years of our lives in Areola. The people and the school are great. I can't think of a better community in the state of Illinois to raise kids than Areola." Parrish, who is known for his 1-2-2 ball court press, went from Deland, a school with an enrollment of 80 to Areola, a school that had an enrollment of 210 and now to Clinton, which has an enrollment of 640.

At Areola, Parrish has the longest tenure of any coach and finished with a record of 141-129. The Purple Riders earned one Little Okaw Valley Conference regular season title (1990) and three LOVC tournament titles (1996, '98 and '99). The 1998 squad became the ninth team in school history to have a 20-win season. That team was 20-10. Parrish helped Areola to finish with six straight winning seasons and the Purple Riders averaged 18 wins during that time.

"Murphy probably needed to pitch more but I have to come back and pitch Saturday so this was better for me," Hilligoss said. In addition to completing the shutout, Hilligoss also had the chance to hit for the cycle when he batted in the eighth inning. But the Windsor graduate with a scholarship to Purdue was not necessarily thinking home run.

"Not really," Hilligoss said. Not continued from Andy Vincent in the quarterback race. Completing 20 of 32 passes for 241 yards, the freshman had a good intrasquad spring game that Spoo said narrowed the gap. But that game to complete spring drills apparently also was when King suffered an injury. "To be honest, I hurt my lower back," King said.

"I hurt it in the spring game. It's not getting any better. "It was hurting a lot but I didn't think much of it (during the spring game). King set eight school records and a Wisconsin high school championship game passing record leading Marshfield to the large-school state championship. But now never played in an EIU game. Also a baseball pitcher, King now may be focusing on that sport at least for the coming school year. But that does not mean his football career is considered done.
