TUESDAY/SEPTEMBER 24, 1963 ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH PAGE FIFTEEN Obituaries Fairish Carl A, Parrish of Carbon, dale, former manager of Alton office of Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., died Monday at Peorla while attending a meet- Ing honoring veteran employes of the company. Death apparently was due to a heart attack. Mr. Parrish, who had been active in Rotary and civic pro,< jects, In Alton, started with Metropolitan as agent In Carbondale, and 10 years ago after s u f f e ring a heart attack re. turned to Carbondale. He came to Alton In 1938 and for a number of years lived at 1501 Liberty St. Widely known In Rotary, Masonic and Insurance circles In the state, Mr. Parrish had been a member and former officer of Alton Rotary, and had served as a director and vice president of Greater Alton Association of Commerce, and also as city chairman of the Community Chest. He also was a member of the Life Underwriters Association of which he was a past president and was a member of the national committee. Survivors include his widow, the former Ethel Killer, to whom he was married Feb. 24, 1924 a son, Ralph, and a daughter, Joan, all of Carbondale. Funeral rites will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. In Huffman Funeral Home, Carbondale. Burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Carbondale. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Rain Ml-s. Mary Ann Hall, 94, widow of Edward Hall, died Monday in Riverview Nursing Home where she had been a patlejit for three years. Her husband, barber at Western Military Academy and the old Wyman Institute for 46 years previous to his retirement, died in March of 1962. Mrs. Hall, the former Mary Blackburn, was born in Alton July 11, 1869, 'to the late Mr. and Mrs. William Blackburn. Before enter- Ing the nursing home she had lived at 2215 Brown St. She was married to Edward Hall in Alton on April 25, 1889. They were long time members of First Methodist Church and had occupied the same pew there for 37 years until they were disabled by infirmities. A granddaughter, Mrs. Helen Paimenter, Warwick, R. I., and a great-grandson, survive her. The body is at Streeper Funeral Home where services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Robert Simpson, pastor of First Methodist Church. Burial will be in Alton Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be after 7 p.m. today. Christopher John Rain, 55, of 3643 S. Broadway, St. Louis, a native and former resident of Alton, died Monday at 6:30 p.m. in Veterans General Hospital, St. Louis. He bad been ill for six weeks and entered the hospital 10 days ago. A son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christopher W. Rain, he was born to Alton, Sept. 11, 1908, and attended the Alton public schools. He was a veteran of World War n, and before moving to St. Louis had lived in Santa Monica, Calif., for 12 years. Surviving are his widow, four daughters and four sons; five sisters, Mrs. Clifford Hand and Mrs. Gerald DeGerlia, Godfrey; Mrs. Raymond Sturgeon and Mrs. Howard Darr, Alton, and Mrs. Lloyd Smith, Hardin, and four grandchil dren. Funeral rites will be conducted in Gent Chapel Thursday at 1 p.m. followed by burial in Godfrey Cemetery. Visiting hours at the chapel will be after 2 p.m. Wednesday. Short GREENFIELD — Newton Short, retired farmer, died at 8:54 p.m. Monday in Boyd Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since May 13. He was 72. Active in civic, fraternal and church work, and a charter member of Greene County Farm Bureau, Mr. Short was widely acquainted in the area. He was born near Greenfield, Nov. 20, 1890, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Short. He was married to the former Laura Hickman, May 31, 1916,. Surviving are his widow; a son, Hickman Short, St. Louis; a sister, Miss Evalea Short, Greenfield; a brother, Harley, Alton, and two grandchildren. Funeral rites will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. In Shields Memorial Home by the Rev. Roger Christiansen of Carrollton. He was 77. Before entering the nursing home Mr. Wolkovitch lived at 507 Pearl St. He was born in Poland, Ju# 27, 1886. He had lived in Alton since 1950. Mr. Wolkovitch was a membei of the Russian Orthordox Church and belonged to the Eagles Lodge in Alton. The Rev. Thebdosius Lazor of Madison, a Russian Orthodox priest, will conduct funeral services Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Upper Alton Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be after 7 p.m. today. Henson Interment' In Valhalla Park Funeral services for Mrs. Rose Ann Henson were conducted Monday at 1:30 p.m. in First Baptist Church, Wood River, by the Rev. Walter C. Burk, pastor of the church, and the Rev. John Lobos, pastor of Rosewood Heights Baptist Church. Burial was in Valhalla Memorial Park. Serving as pallbearers were Luke Waltrip, Ivan Heiderscheid, Estol Hefner, Robert Borman, Clarence and Kenneth Heffner.
