If you were able to louk at the earth as It was cut open, like an apple for example, you would see that it is made up of three main layers — the crust, the mantle, and the core. The topmost layer is the crust. It is made of solid rock. Under the continents the crust is about 20 to 30 miles thick. But under the oceans it is only about 3 miles thick. The mantle goes down to depth of about 1,800 miles. It is also made of solid rock. But there is much greater heat and pressure at these depths, so the rock of the mantle is not perfectly rigid. At times it can even flow very, very slowly. The innermost part of the earth is the core, which is about 2,100 miles in radius. Because of the great heat, the material of the core is liquid. It is believed that iron and nickel make up most of it. To understand exactly why the earth is made up of these layers, scientists would have to know how the earth was formed. But all we have about that so far is theories. For example, some scientists believe that !he earth was cold and wet in the beginning. Other scientists believe that the earth was always intensely hot. The surface was made up of molten rock. Gradually :he molten rock formed into a crust over the earth. Below the crust, the other rock — the mantle — has not yet cooled so as to become rigid. And below that, the pressure and the original heat keep the core in a liquid state.
