Junior Editors Quiz on- MONUMENTS QUESTION: What and where is Cleopatra's Needle? ANSWER: The ancient Egyptians were great ones for making huge monuments out of stone. They built the great pyramids and carved the monstrous sphinx. They also carved long, pointed monuments called "obelisks," which were covered with writing. Two of these obelisks are called "Cleopatra's Needles," after an Egyptian queen who lived about 1,000 years after the obelisks were carved. The obelisks at first stood in front of a temple of the sun in Heliopolis, Egypt. Nearly 100 years ago, the ruler of Egypt presented Cleopatra's Needles as gifts to the United States and Great Britain. One now stands in Central Park in New York City. The other is on the embankment of the Thames River in London. FOR YOU TO DO: Make a small obelisk of clay and scratch into the surface some of the strange characters in the drawing. The characters are called "hieroglyphics," a type of writing used in ancient Egypt. (Billy Delong of San Lorenzo, Calif., wins $10 for this question. Send your question on a postcard to Violet Moore Higgins, AP Newsfeatures, in care of this newspaper. If duplicate questions are received, Mrs. Higgins will select the winner.)
