Effingham (Staff) Germany's invasion of Yugoslavia probably will serve to unite the Croats and Slovenes of that country, but that unity may have been achieved too late, according to-Hal-vern Norris. former Effingham resident who lately came from the American legation at Belgrade. Yugoslavia. A member of the United States diplomatic corps since the World war, Mr.

Norris has watched Germany's descent upon the weaker nations of Europe in pursuit of aims which, he believes, "are more far-reaching than many Americans seem to think." Nephew of Mrs. Ryman Now on a month's vacation after returning from Yugoslavia, Mr. Norris arrived here Monday for a visit with his sister, Mrs. William Broom of Effingham, before going to California where he will resume government service. Mr.

Norris is a nephew of Mrs. Cora B. Ryman, former Macon county superintendent of schools, and was a diplomatic clerk in Siam. now Thailand, several years ago at the time Mrs. Ryman's son, Herbert, an artist of the Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer movie studios, visited that country while on a world tour to obtain background material for his studio.

The first seven years of Mr. Norris' 15 years of diplomatic service were spent in Tokio, with the exception of six months spent in Peking. Then for five and one-half years he was a diplomatic clerk at Bangkok, Siam, and then for two and one-half years he served, as vice-counsul at Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Widely Traveled His travels include a trip around the world, the crossing of the Pacific ocean six times, and the Atlantic three times, he also travelled extensively in Germany, Egypt and China. He has mastered several different languages among which the use of the Japanese and German proved the most practical to him.

The others, Italian, Serbian, and French were needed for translation. Norris was taught the Serbian language by a Russian teacher who, spoke French but not English. Norris said he found the Siamese very pro-American during the 'h ENJOY THE EASE AND CONVENIENCE Confusion in Europe He says that there seemed to be a great confusion of national differences and prejudices in Europe and the nationas of Central Europe have failed to grasp the privileges of democracy being influenced by despotism. In speaking the Yugoslavs, Norris states that they are a sturdy and hardy people and probably will fight just as violently as the Greeks. Economically, the country ras experienced great difficulties since its organization under the Versailles treaty.

It is not as well equipped with armament as could be hoped and Norris expressed his hope that the United States would support Yugoslavia in its resistance of Nazism.
