Employment Increases Latest reports of empbyment on Class 1 railroads of the United States as of the middle of May showed a total of 1,124.719, an increase of 11.05 per cent, as compared to the corresponding time in 1940. and an increase of 4.05 per cent over the previous April. Compared to a year ago this date. the maintenance of way workers show the greatest per cent of gain, a matter of 14.09 per cent: maintenance of equipment and stores which means shopmen chiefly, gained 14.11 per cent.

Wabash highballs through Decatur yards over the weekend handled 86 cars of tomatoes Saturday and 99 carloads Sunday. While these seem like huge figures they are not up to the volume of tomatoes handled last year. A year ago Saturday the road handled 144 cars of tomatoes through Decatur yards. Personnel Notes Conductor Skow of the Wabash north end service has reported for duty after being off about two weeks and has taken a through freight turn. Conductor Hartnady of the Wabash west end through freight service, who has been off duty about 10 days, because of iilness and death of a sister, has reported for work.

The work train, which the Wabash had in operation on the south end of this division for several weeks. was cancelled last week. causing a string of bumps to start among the enginemen and trainmen. Mrs. H.

D. Mayno, wife of the B. and O. agent at Atwood for many years, died in a Decatur hospital Sunday. Professor to Conduct Clinton Peace Meeting Clinton (Staff) "How to Keep America Out of War' will be discussed by Prof.

Coon Dog Trials Near Lincoln Next Sunday Lincoln (Staff) The Midwest Coon Dog association will hold a field trial and fish fry on Sunday.

Wabash Work Shows Steady Upward Surge Not with any flourish or suddenness but with just a steady up-; ward surge, the Wabash traffic continues its gains and adds more crews. One more through freight train crew has been added to the south pool to make 15 turns, while one more has been added to the west end pool to make 13. Both are bulletined for bids from conductors and brakemen to Sunday.

Furloughed Brakemen McDaniel, Purdy and Collier have been recalled to the west end extra board. Others were recalled to other extra boards last week. And that has been the story for some weeks now with nearly all furloughed men back at work or due to be back soon. At the end of the third week in June the Decatur division had handied 1.441 trains. 68,095 loads and 35.926 empties in the three weeks.

Compared to the like period of 1940, this is a gain of 13.640 loads, or a little more than 25 per cent, and a gain of a little more than 15 per cent in trains operated. The loads handled were the highest for any like period in more than a year except for last March. Carmen Picnic Members of the Wabash local No. 277. Brotherhood of Railway Carmen of America, together with members of their families, are to hold their annual picnic next Saturday in Nelson Park according to posters displayed at various points by the committee Monday.

Use of the big pavilion in that park has been secured for the day. Numerous games and contests are scheduled to start off the outing at 1 p. m. and prizes will be gIVen the contest winners. The usual potluck dinner will be served In the pavilion at 6 p.

m. This will be followed by entertainment and dancing for the remainder of the evening. with music by Clarence Miller's orchestra. Tickets for free refreshments, furnished by the lodge for members and their families. will ba given out as the member and family arrive.

The committee in charge is composed of John Lee. Bob Durbin and Leo Waller. Finish Mansfield Bridge Wabash bridge and building forces have just completed replacing an old 125-foot ovr-grade wooden trestle just north of Mansfield with concreat foundations and treated materials.
