His three-club call can only be ascribed to that bad humor which was not improved any when West let out, a resounding double but when the smoke had cleared away South was positively beaming while East and West were engaged in one of thos« verbal fights that seem to enliven rubber bridge games. Diamonds were continued with South ruffing the third lead. He finessed dummy's queen of hearts and ruffed the last diamond while East jettisoned a heart. Next came a heart to the ace and a ruff of a heart with East disposing of the deuce of spades. East had had two chances to use his 10 of clubs but had held it back. Now South led a low spade and West did his bit to help South along. Instead of ducking he played his ace and led the suit back. South cashed the king and queen of spades and led a heart from dummy. East had a last chance to beat the contract but he still refused to put his 10 of clubs to work. H e ruffed low. Sou'h overruffed with the eight and West was forced to win the trick and lead to Soutn's trump tenace. (AP) — Convention hoopla swirled around him, but tears filled the eyes of a young Michigan delegate as the slate's 48 votes went to renominate S p i r o Agnew for vice president. Richard Posthumus, 21, third vice president of the Michigan GOP, had told state party chairman William McLaughlin several minutes before the vote as the Republican National Convention Wednesday night that he wanted to abstain. McLaughlin told him: "Do what you want, but it would be very embarrassing for the governor," who had praised Agnew in a speech a day earlier. McLaughlin quickly huddled with Michigan Gov. William Milliken and another delegate, and then Posthumus was hurried a distance away. Whjle they were gone, Michigan came up in the roll call, and Milliken declared: ''Michigan, where the Republican party is the party of all the people, casts 48 votes for Spiro Agnew." Posthumus, tears filling his eyes, told another delegate: '•it's not worth it to make a big fuss over it, but I wanted to vote my conscience." He did not say why lie objected to voting for Agnew. Milliken said later that Posthumus "relinquished his vote to an alternate." The governor said he was unaware that an alternate had aoi been found.
