Jan. 15. 1851—Fifty new counties created in western Iowa, thirty-four with permanent boundaries. Jan. 25. 1867—First Iowa life insurance company organized in Des Moines. Jan. 30, 1899—Farmers in vicinity of Rockwell met in town hall to organize a cooperative society. WOLF. The C. A. Stow family of near Merrill had the wolf ;it their Hew recently. Farmers' Income Tax Must fie Paid By Jan. 15 Having trouble with the income tax report? H. B. Howell. Iowa State College farm management specialist, makes the following suggestions to help Iowa farmers properly fill out their tax forms. First, says Howell, any farmer who had a gross income of $500 or more during 1947 must file a federal estimate of the net income for 1947, or the final return, by.Jan. 15. 1918. and pay the full amount of any tax due at that time. If a .declaration (estimated net income) is filled, the final return must be filed by March 15. In cither case, payment is made January 15. Forms to Use. As to the proper form, a farmer must use form 1040. "Individual Income Tax Return." He must also use form 1040F. "Schedule of Farm Income and Expenses." if ho reports on a cash basis. Form 1040F is optional in reporting farm income on the accrual basis. Most farmers will find it the best form to use when reporting on the accrual basis, Howell thinks. Net income, figured on form I040F, is transferred to form 1040 where it is figured with other items of income and deductions for calculation of the income tax. Keep a Copy. Howell says to get two copies of federal form 1040. together with one copy of the instruction sheet, and two copies of federal form 1040F. A copy of each form is filed with the Collector of Internal Revenue. The remaining copy should be kept by the farmer for reference. This is important. If the return is questioned, the taxpayer must know exactly what he put down in the copy he turned in. Farmers are not required to withhold the federal income lax from wages paid farm help. It is the hired man's responsibility to make his own return and pay his own taxes. However. Howell says that farmers should report wages paid hired workers—if the wage is $500 or more for the year. This report must be sent to the Bureau of Internal Revenue, using form 1099 and form 1096. A hired man with a gross income of $500 must file a return. Included in this gross arc cash wages! plus a fair value for board and ! lodging or for use of a house, and products supplied him. However, i if the hired worker must live on his ! employer's premises to fulfill his : c'utics, no estimation for bmivd and j lodging is necessary. , PROOF OF WILL.
