Sectlqn if Battling Bows to 20 16 A 3 71 hJ 'SJ Sunday Sept 30 1962 4 I to? p' mu Wrgminnibi' I By ED BRANDT Virginian Pilot Sporti Editor ANNAPOLIS William and Mary an annual breather on Navy's schedule left the Middies breathless before losing Saturday 20 16 Navy actually had to come from behind in the final eight minutes of the game to win after ANNAPOLIS Md Statistics of the William Mary Navv same: Navy irst downs 15 20 Rushins yardage 127 140 Passing yardage 80 185 Passes 7 13 13 72 Passes Interceded by 3 0 Punts 4 38 2 31 umbles lost 2 2 Yards penalized 35 70 William 8 Mary 3 0 16 Svdow kick) 20632 the Indians had taken a 16 13 lead early in the fourth quarter Then the Middies held off a William and Mary drive that car ried to the Navy 12 with four minutes remaining to win for the 24th time in the 27 game series There were no tricks to the Indian stand against heavily fa vored Navy They refused to fold after falling behind 13 3 in the first half and simply slugged it out with the mobile Navy line through the final two quarters Two personal foul penalties hurt badly incidentally William and Mary blew its chance to completely stun Navy in the final minutes of the game when quarterback Dan Henning found end Dave Lipke with a pass in the clear on the Navy 17 but the pass was thrown too low and Lipke had to fall down to catch it The Indians got to the 12 on the next play but losses by Hen ning attempting to pass left the ball in possession on its 25 and William and Mary with its last real opportunity gone ullback Stan Penkunas with 61 yards gained rushing and half back Charlie Weaver with 42 led the Indians Weaver per formed brilliantly scoring one touchdown on a 13 yard pass from Henning and setting up an other with his line crashing It was Penkunas however who brought William and Mary back into the game on the first scrim mage play of the second half when he recovered a fumble in midair by teammate Scott Swan on the 35 and carried it 53 yards to the Navy 12 to set up the first touchdown NAVY MISTAKES Navy play badly but lost the ball three times on intercep tions two of which were deflect ed passes and twice on fumbles to keep itself in trouble Quarterback Ron Klemick passed for 185 yards and one touchdown He completed 13 of 22 passes including one of 55 yards to fullback Pat Donnelly in the second quarter This was the backbreaker for William and Mary as it turned out The Indians had just driven to the Navy 13 moving well be hind their big line and trailing only by 7 3 when Dick Kern fumbled the ball away Klem ick threw the touchdown pass to Donnelly eight plays later The Middies started quickly taking the opening kickoff and going 69 yards to score in 13 plays Johnny Sail best player Saturday went around his right end for the final four yards When Vern Von Sydow convert ed for a 7 0 Navy lead with only five minutes gone it appeared this was to be a typical Navy William and Mary game But Ron Jones recovered a Navy fumble on the a 36 near the end of the first quar ter and ten plays later Steve Bishop kicked a field goal from the 27 to make it 7 3 Navy Penkunas put the Indians in the kick Navy led 13 3 with 641 in the second quarter Considering lack of depth this appeared to be a safe halftime lead William and Mary received the kickoff to start the second half and on the first play from scrim mage Swan started around his left end fubblecL antj the ball bounced right into the arms of Penkunas who had been trailing the play Penkunas ran all the way to the Navy 12 and after three plays lost a yard Henning passed to Weaver in the end zone Weaver outbattling Jim Stewart for the ball and the touchdown Bishop missed the point after a poor snap from center and Wil liam and Mary still trailed 13 9 with less than three minutes gone in the third period THREAT DIES A personal foul set up a return Navy threat almost immediately but center Dick Korns 'made a fine play to throw Klcmick for a loss on the William and Mary 17 zzy' will i MIDDIE ON THE MOVE Pat Donnelly whose second touchdown brought a 20 16 win over William Mary on this second quarter play steams ahead for six yards dragging an Indian anchor named Dave Lipke with Joe Hcngrickson (left) moving in to help with the stop second toudhdown brought Navy from behind in the last eight minutes of play at Annapolis (AP) Navy territory again almost im mediately when he picked off a deflected Klemick pass and re turned it to the Middie 47 The Indians with Weaver run ning skillfully through the Navy line brought the ball to the 13 where Kern fumbled 55 yard pass to Donnelly followed and although Von Sydow missed where the threat died and ends the Indians moved to The third period was half way gone when William and Mary re ceived the break that helped put it in front for the first time Dan Driscoll intercepted a deflected the one from where quarterback Dan Armour of Princess Anne plunged over Bishop's conversion made it 16 13 William and Mary with less than two minutes left pass on the Navy 44 and re in the third quarter turned it to the 39 Unfortunately for the Indians With Weaver and Sam Miller there was no defense sufficient belting away at the Navy center'to stop Sai and Klemick and Navy after receiving the kickoff moved from its own 23 to a touchdown in 13 plays Donnelly scoring his second touchdown for Navy with a two yard stab at his left tackle There was 7:32 left in the game when Von Sydow converted for a 20 16 Navy lead Surprisingly William and Mary still had something left Key pass es by Henning to Weaver Jones and Lipke brought to the Navy 17 and a first down with four minutes remaining Kern picked up five to the 12 on the first down but Swan and Henning were thrown back to the 25 on the next three plays and William and Mary spent most of the remaining three minutes try ing to stop Navy from scoring a fourth touchdown As it was this was the first time in the history of the series that William and Mary had scored more than one touchdown If there are moral victories Wil liam and Mary won one Satur day Dodgers Bow to 2 Hitter LOS ANGELLS (AP) The St Louis Cardinals getting superb I 2 McCLELLAND virglnian Pllot Sports Writer RICHMOND A non smoking type embarrassed both the indus try and Virginia Tech in the 14th annual Tobacco estival football game This stalwart young man a 6 2 junior with a minimum of conversation and blond hair named Jerry Yost escorted West Virginia to a 14 0 victory on a perfectly delightful Saturday aft ernoon 4 In the first period Yost faked a handoff to his fullback Glenn Holton so successfully that the Tech defenders followed the lat path into the line Then the Mountaineer quarterback slipped inside of his left end and ran 56 yards into the end zone No one touched him This maneuver capped an 88 yard push that consumed seven plays In even more dramatic fashion the behemoths in mus tard colored play suits ripped 70 yards in 13 plays at the close of the first half Mountaineers finished with 295 yards total offense Tech with 207 In first downs it was West Virginia 14 Tech 11 With 134 yards rushing and passing Yost hiked his two game Clegg a soph omore end fell into the end zone with three seconds showing on the clock Both times Glenn Bennett a senior who does nothing but kick made good on the conversion try That second touchdown looked awfully good to West Virginia people and to those who bet on the Mountaineers giving away 13'i points or three times in the second half Virginia Tech made deep to the five the 10 and the 22 This is a big but ponderous West Virginia team the same one which smashed Vanderbilt 26 0 a week ago with Mr Yost figur ing in all the touchdowns It was the opening Southern Conference game for the Mountaineers and perhaps they deserve their favored rating But without Yost a lad who played just 14 minutes as a sophomore and who ranked liehind sophomore Pastilong in the spring Virginia Tech would have gotten away even Pastilong is out for the season because of an injury The difference in short was the big play West Virginia got it twice Tech was unable to make one Coaches Jerry Claiborne of Tech and Gene Corum of West Virginia agreed on the key the touchdown before the half "Without that score the situa tion would have been quite dif ferent in the second Clai borne said The two successful West Virgin ia pushes made tha difference in statistics as well as score The their strongest stand in three games and a key man was Philip Cary the youngster who played fullback at Norview
