£ JT 0 ^ 9k -W Evening Telegraph Wednesday, Aug. 23, If)' Injection method may not stop basement leaks • ' • '-'•••• •.../ . '••• A .- 5 . :..'. .' •• >.; • .. +/ '•'. • . JL V By Peter Weaver Consumer Writer Q — My basement kept flooding after heavy rains so I made a deal with one of these companies that injects material into the ground to stop leaks. I paid more than $300. The basement flooded again and now they say r have to pay more. Is this legal? - M.D., Philadelphia, Pa. A—Maybe. Read the fine Two suspects in arms sales CHICAGO (AP) -Two men have been ordered held for the Cook County grand jury on charges connected with the theft and illegal sale of a shipment of firearms valued at §20,000. State's attorney's police said Joseph DeSalvo, 29, and Howard Walls, 36, both of west suburban Oak Park, allegedly arranged the sale of. 89 shotguns, a machine gun and about $4,000 worth of fireworks to undercover agents. Investigators said the shotguns were stolen in March during shipment from the Remington Arms factory in Ilion, N.Y., to a sporting goods firm in Schaller, Iowa. DeSalvo and Walls were arrested May 11. print on the contract. Ytni may have agreed to pay more if additional work was needed tb stop the leaks. The "injection" method, according to foundation contractors, Is not the surest way to stop leaky basement problems. They inject sodium bentamite into the ground and hope that, as it expands, it will stop leaks. More often, you need excavation work and reseallng of the wall. Drain tile at the base of the foundation needs to be checked and probably repaired. Call some foundation contractors (phone book Yellow Pages) and ask who they recommend to do this kind of a job. The Federal Housing Administration has received so many complaints on the "injection" method of fixing leaky basements, it no longer qualifies for government- backed home-improvement loans. Q—I spilled hair coloring on my bathroom carpets How should I remove it? — Mrs. E.E , Norfolk, Neb. A—Strange as it seems, hair bleach might help. I'.ut be sure to test it on an inconspicuous corner first. The dyes in indoor-outdoor carpets are often not harmed by ;his kind of bleach. Another choice is to scrub with a neutral detergent (Duz or Lux). Use a tablespoonful to a cup of warm water. Rinse well with sponge or absorbent cloth. When It's dry, vacuum up the excess detergent. Q—Restaurants pay a tax on the liquor they buy. Then the waitress comes along and collects another tax on each drink. Isn't this double taxation? — D.C., Springfield, Mass. A—Seems like it, but it's perfectly legal. The federal tax on the liquor is charged to the restaurant on a volume basis. Then, of course, the restaurant charges enough to cover the cost, On top of that, according to state law, they have to charge another tax to cover the individual serving an:! service. Next thing you know, they'll have a "tax per gulp." (Peter Weaver welcomes questions from readers f<-r possible use in his column.
