Good records will ease Income tax reporting Income tax time is history for this year, but it is not too early to bc^in planning for lax time, 1D02. Since Mrs, American Iliiee- vvife has taken over much of this "planning" for personal income taxes, she can help herself and her husband by d«in/; the job a.s efficiently as possible, say tax experts in the State University of Iowa college of law. If she isn't already aware i .;f deductions the Internal Revenue Service allows, .she should get a briefing from Hubby so she will know what to save Generally, she should keep evidences of spending for taxes, interest, contributions and medical and dental services, including medical insurance payments. She shi .'Uld also keep records of "outside" income such as dividends, interest, rents and royalties. If Hubby is self-employed, she may also have to keep track of that income. In these cases, she can note on the retained copy of the bank deposit slip whether the amount deposited is income or non-income. Canceled checks are the best evidences of deductible expenses, so it's best to pay bills by check whenever possible, the tax experts advise. If you must pay cash for drugs, for example, you should keep the purchaser's receipt marked "paid." Revenue auditors are very reasonable about allowing modest contributions, even in the absence of records, the SUI lawyers say. But it would be well to write checks for any contributions amounting to $10 or more. Unless you're sure you uv-'n't forget, it is a good idea to write on the check its purpose, the SUI professor says. If you prefer, this can be written in your check register or check stubs. If your canceled checks are filed by months, you can quickly scan the register and easily find the check if you are asked to produce it. Mom may also want to keep a record book of the family's income and expenses, but the record book won't be enough for the Internal Revenue Service. She must also have canceled checks and, in some cases, bank deposit slips to back /Up her claims. The whole job of keeping records will be easier if they are kept up to date, the SUIowans An honored name in CLOTHING *fOR^OV£R HALF A CENTURY" We Have A Large Selection Of j Men's and Young Men's Light Weight Jackets Just Right For Cool Days $5.00 & $5.95 Oelwein CAR TIRES TRACTOR TIRES Come In Today WE'RE READY TO TRADE It's Hard To Find BETTER BARGAINS Than Those At Campbell's Station DEEP ROCK SERVICE Ed Campbell, Proprietor PAULSEN Heating & Plumbing ARE SPECIALISTS IN • Gas and Oil Heating • Boilers • Conversions • Air Conditioning NO JOB TOO LARGE OR TOO SMALL — FREE ESTIMATES GLADLY GIVEN — CALL US COLLECT — Oelwein 381 Your York Heating & Air Conditioning Dealer 133 So. It's also a good idea to reserve a special drawer for canceled checks and other records or to keep them in carefully marked folders or envelopes, the tax expert.'; suggest. They sb7uld also he kept in a safe place — preferably a fire-proof box. A revenue auditor won't be favorably impressed if told they "had been destroyed by rats." Keip your records for at least five years. These records should include the checks you use to pay income taxes. Usually the Internal Revenue Ser- vicc foes back only three years, but if considerable income hasn't been reported, the government can go back beyond the third- year period, going back as many years as the auditors wish if no returns were filed or if fraud can be piovcd. Careful planning for income tax time can pay dividends, both in saved tempers and saved taxes. Remember that every dollar of legitimate deductions you fail to take can result in at least 20 cents of unnecessary income tax.
