Swearingen, president of the Standard Oil Foundation, said in a letter transmitting the funds that no restrictions are placed on their use by a college, as long as they arc spent "wherever they are needed to improve the educational program." They may be applied wholly or in part, he explained, toward operating costs, research, libraries, salaries, or even building programs. Placement of the February class was just as rapid. "Undoubtedly some of this easier placement stems from the fact that each year more publishers become aware of just what they can expect from SUI trainees. Even those whose attitude or ability does not merit my U p recommendation are still given a chance to make good. "Each 'trainee establishes his own recommendation while in training. It is most important that I be able to tell a prospective employer that a man has good potential and should develop — even though I may not be too happy with the actual work he did for me," said the former Iowa publisher. There have been many new developments in the graphic arts field, especially during the last 10 years. The printing industry offers fine opportunities to people interested in creative printing and publishing. Of the 400 trainees who have taken the course at Iowa City, several now have their own newspapers or printing plants and many more have worked up to responsible executive positions in the industry.
