compiled their first winning season since 1953 Defensive end Billy Wray scored the only touchdown when he raced 42 yards with a recovered fumble with less than a minute remaining in the first half The down with a fumble recovery and intercepted pass The Generals ran only five of fensive plays in the first six minutes of the game but scored three touchdowns in that time Warren started off the all but forgotten Thanksgiving Day erupted with a tremendous two touchdown effort in the second quarter to upset favored Virginia Military 13 12 before 27500 spec tators in Victory Stadium But the Gobblers were given the scare of their lives when the keydets from Lexington un leashed a frenzied passing attack that produced two fourth quar ter touchdowns but the South ern Conference champions were unable to make any extra points The outcome turned on VMI's decision to go for the two pointer after the second score Howard Dyer the" VMI quarter back who is known sissippi tried to pass but was rushed and tackled on the Tech eight STATE TITLE The victory enabled Virginia Tech to wrap up the Big ive championship as the Gobblers fin ished the season with a 4 0 rec ord in Old Dominion competition Tech's overall record was 6 4 duplicating Coach rank Mose 1959 mark It was 45th winning season and Mose sixth The gold helmeted Keydets won the tossup but the Gobblers took command and for more than three quarters of the game held the upper hand So completely did the' hard hit ting Gobblers dominate both of fensive and defensive phases of this hard fought game that the Kaydets were able to register only one first down and were held to a net of five yards rush ing in the first 30 minutes of play Much credit in this Turkey Day classic should go to mag nificent line play Guard Mike Zeno tackles Don Oakes Allen Whittier and center Rickey Tolley threw up a stubborn defense that caused the Keydets no little em barrassment TECH PASSES CLICK Both of touchdowns came via the overhead method and in both instances quarterback Warren Price to halfMck Terry Strqck It was an effective combination and the Keydets had plenty of trouble with it The Gobblers a three point underdog at the outset stormed 61 yards in 16 plays for their first touchdown It came on the eighth play of the second quarter Price Strock and Johnny Watkins figured in on the goalward march With the ball on the Gobblers had put together a series of four first' Vir ginia Tech scored Price found Strock in the end zone and zipped the pass to him It was fifth touchdown of the year Aster Sizemore booted the ball through end zone with 22 seconds left in the game Morson had gotten behind the Great Bridge secondary Just as he stretched out his arms for the reception Great Bridge halfback Jimmy Cutchins batted the ball out of hands Cooper threw again on the next down but Charlie Jones a Great Bridge end caught this one in the end zone and took it back to the Wild cat 22 Great Bridge then ran out the clock SERIOUS THREAT The Wildcats made their most serious threat in the first quarter They drove down to the Norview 11 yard line but the Pilot? held on downs Statistically Norview was the master The Pilots picked up 282 yards rushing to 181 for Great Bridge Norview made 16 first downs to Great 11 No one figured this long awaited match would end in a scoreless deadlock Great Bridge despite the shutout last week was the highest scoring team inthe state Norview never a free scoring outfit always manages to get some points The Pilots beat Hampton 2 0 in another classic at this same site last year About 14000 watched that one The last time a Norview eleven was held scoreless was Nov 13 1954 a Saturday night in Rich mond against Hermitage The last time at Chittum ield was Oct 1 1954 against a Wilson team
