•Junior Editors Quiz on- WHIRLPOOLS SWEETIE PIE By Nodine Seltxer QUESTION: What makes a whirlpool? ANSWER: A whirlpool is a mats of wattr that flows with graat speed and force in a small circle. A number of factors influence the formation of whirlpools. A strangely shaped river bank can deflect the current back on itself and start the water going in a circle. The whirlpool in the gorge below Niagara Falls is caused for this reason. A clash of currents or tides also can send waters into a whirlpool motion. The best known tidal whirlpool is the Maelstrom, off the coast of Norway, which has destroyed small ships. FOR YOU TO DO: Fill a large deep pan full of water. Now stir the water swiftly in a circular motion. This is one of the principles of the whirlpool. The round sides of the pan deflect the water in a circle.
