four countries in the inaugural running of the $50000 Washington International at Course It was one of races ever seen of Maryland and a history making event that assures a continuance of such international affairs in years to come In addition the British horse set a course record on the infield turf course in a race foreigners were given little chance to win i English Jockey Up Wilwyn Devils fifth ranked team in the nation roll relentlessly be hind the expert quarterbacking of Worth Lutz and last start ing signal caller Jerry Barger Duke poured across three touch downs in the first period added three more and a safety in the sec ond and closed out with two in the third Halfback Red Smith con verted seven of eight extra point attempts It was hardly more than a scrim mage for the mighty Blue Devils who are unbeaten in five games State never seriously threatened until late in the final period when it moved to the eight with the help of several penalties The game was rough Duke 5 Jim Terrific Terps today as mighty Maryland's football jugger naut crushed the previously un beaten Middles 38 to 7 and swept to its 17th straight victory A record breaking crowd of more than 44716 largest ever to see a football game in the front yard of the capital watched the Terps manhandle the Middies throughout this bruising battle Jack Scarbath great field general played a whale of: a game for Terps as he maneuvered his team to victory It was his pin point passing that broke the backs of the "Middies He could do no wrong and sure ly stamped himself as the top flight quarterback in the collegi ate business today He directed split with boldness and superb skill deftly handling the ball to his Ed uller ton Chester Hanlak and Ralph elton starting quar Six Terps figured in route a violently fought affair from start to finish The Terps utilized the air lanes effectively for fourj touchdowns One touchdown on a jaunt off tackle and the addi tlonal eight points were registered by Don Decker who kicked five extra points and contributed a 27 yard field goal So effective did the Terps shac kle the (Middies that Navy penetrate Maryland territory until the fourth period lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter after a drive of 70 yards Don isher circling his right end from the one yard linb It took Maryland only six min utes and 25 seconds to tally and then it was only a question of how hJLfi a OLVIU II4C xuip wuuiu run up 1 The Terps set a pattern early in the game got the jump on the Middies and never varied in so far as crushing superiority was concerned Maryland so domi nated the Middies both on offense and defense to such a bewildering extent that Navy was held to a net of 26 yards rushing Rough Game devastating land and air attack piled up 439 yards The Terps amassed 21 first downs Navy collected six The contest developed into a knock down drag out affair with Maryland getting 87 yards in penalties and Navy 80 Both teams had their stars ejected from the game because of rough play Navy plavers escorted to the sidelines were halfback rank Adorney tackle rank Docsey and guard Steve Eisenhauer and defensive quarterback Bob Destefano Mary land lost ends Art Hurd Stan is cher and end Jim Byrom sturdy defense that had turned back three previous Satur day Yale Cornel and Wil liam and Mary stop the consistent hammering of the Ter rific Terps It was one of those days Maryland had everything to offer and Navy stop them Unbeaten in 20 Games Maryland unbeaten in 20 con tests gave the Middies a taste of what was to come by scoring the first time it gained possession of the leather last defeat was by State in 1950 a 16 13 loss Navy took the opening kick off but do much and halfback Tom Hamilton kicked to Mary 24 yard stripe ullerton and Scarbath quickly netted eight yards And then on a keep play Scarbath bulled over for a first down on the 35 Scarbath tried his passing arm and flipped to Lloyd Colteryahn for six yards and on second down Scarbath passed to elton who out ran the Navy secondary for the Initial touchdown our minutes later the Terps who met Navy for the last time in Jhis present series had scored again it was almost the same ma neuver Navy gain and Hamilton kicked Maryland start ing from its 48 yard ribbon this time relinquish the leather until Scarbath hit Hanulak on the Middie 10 and he ducked over for the TD The play covered 23 yards Decker converted and it was Maryland 14 0 Still unable tq penetrate Mary land territory after the kick off the Middies had to call upon Ham ilton Jto boot the leather and he kicked to Joe Horning who brought the hogskin back 13 yards to Mary 38 A beautiful forward pass netted Maryland 41 yards Colter yahn got behind Navy's secondary gathered in the pass and ran to 34 Another Scarbath pass also to Colteryahn netted a first down on the But before Mary land could run another play the quarter ended ield Goal Joe Gattuso Navy defensive full back broke through and smeared Hanulak for a three yard loss On the fourth down however Decker booted a 27 yard field goal to put Maryland out front 17 0 The field goal was a gift from the gods The ball hit the cross bar
