A scries of tougher strikes is in the offing. Narrowing profit margins and growing competition will • force management to put up' stiffer fights against featherbedding. Management will insist on ' more flexible control over em ployes in an attempt to reduce • overhead. Unions will fight. The, railroad-union battle will be bitter. Sales will boom. Consumer spending this fall and winter will be up five to seven per cent. People are in a buying mood. The predicters are looking to 6.7 million sales for the I960 automobile models. And they expect the boom to begin this fall. "But they're buying everything," says one respected government economist. "They're putting in air conditioning and swimming pools and buying boats. Used to be a big car was the symbol of prestige. Now people are buying more and more to keep ahead of the Joneses. They're buying anything. "Dangerous? Sure it's danger-, ous. They've got the * added income to spend. But it's£ the sort of thing that could get •> out of hand. Everybody wants tp^ keep ahead of everybody else." 1 Creeping inflation will continue« this fall and winter. Watch for ^ Army, Navy and Air Force cut- 1 backs in missile, aircraft and oth- 1 er programs "to meet rising prices." I Reason for the price rises: nine out of 10 first-rate Washington' economists say it's because wages« are rising faster than productivity. £ Rising labor costs, in turn, are* forcing a sharp fall-winter-spring * business push in automation and 1 labor saving machinery and equip- *» ment orders. The aim: to beat high wages by cutting down on the „ work force. As a result, output per man hour — productivity — should-; move upward 25 per cent faster „ than in the years before the re-* cession. That's a sharp speed up^ of a half of one per cent a year* in productivity. * NEXT: Your cost of living heads up.
