1T2 THEBAYTOWNSUN Tuesday, March 23,1971 Edwards Takes Over As New Chamber President When Charles Tillery gave up the gavel as president of the Baytown Chamber of Commerce, he handed it over to the capable hands of Paul Edwards. Edwards, senior vice president at Peoples State Bank, has been connected with Baytown progress for over 35 years, and has been a big Baytown booster. Edwards, who served as vice president of the chamber during 1970, took over the presidency at the chamber banquet Monday night at the Ramada Tower. Other new officers are Harry Spitz and Knox Beavers, vice presidents; John C. Echols, secretary, and Fred Bednarski, treasurer.

Along with Tillery, the new officers form the executive committee of the Chamber. Edwards, a native of Meridian, moved to Baytown in 1936. He attended Robert E. Lee High School, Lee College and the University of Texas. He has been active in civic affairs in Baytown for many years, including Community 'Chest activities.

He has also BRUCE RAMSEY Bruce Ramsey: He's Where The Action Is Bruce Ramsey, a past president of the chamber, is a man who can usually be found where the action is. Now a senior partner in the law firm of Reid, Strickland, Gillette and Ramsey, he joined the firm in and has been active on the Baytown scene ever since. In addition to many years of active participation in the chamber much of which has been spent as a director Ramsey is a member of the Baytown Kiwanis, on the board! of the YMCA, has served on the vestry at Trinity Episcopal Church and has been active in the Community Chest. Ramsey, who has been in Baytown almost 21 years, is also a member of the Houston Bar Association and in the past year has served on several committees of that organization. He is also on the board of Bank of Baytown.

Ramsey joined the law firm here after completing his work on a law degree at the University of Texas. He became a partner in the firm in 1954. While at Texas, Ramsey met his wife-to-be, Marjorie. Now the proud parents of two daughters, Sara, 17, and a senior at Ross Sterling, and Mary, five, the Ramsey live at 5000 Goose Creek Drive. For relaxation, the Ramseys enjoy golf and sailing.

"We have been an exception to the economy rule, and have continued to prosper while other parts of the country have felt a recession. "And I see nothing but good for next year," he said. "In fact, the future for the next few years looks real good." "And, of course," he "the Baytown Chamber of Commerce will continue to work for a better Baytown by providing an atmosphere acceptable to industry and retail." Edwards and his wife Tassie have one son, David, a senior at Ross Sterling High School.

PAUL EDWARDS dark Completely Involved In Baytown's Schools Chamber director Johnny Clark is deeply and totally involved in one of the community's most important functions: the education of Baytown's school children. An administrator for 16 of his 27 years in the education field, Clark was named superintendent of schools here before the start of the 1969-70 school year. Despite a busy schedule as head of the Goose Creek Independent School District, Clark has been active in many civic ventures. Besides his chamber work, Clark is a member of the Lions Club, an organization in which he served as district governor, is a member of the Masonic Lodge and has taken an active part in the Baytown United Fund drive, in addition, of course, to belonging to many educational organizations.

Born in Pineland, Clark received his BA in math and English from Harding College in Searcy, and his master's in math an3 educational administration at Sul Ross State College at Alpine. He is doing graduate work at Texas Tech. While working on his master's degree, Clark taught school in Langtry, Tex. He then taught at Ozona for one year before being named junior high principal in that district. He held that position for four years.

Clark's first superintendent job came at Ackerly, a post he served for three years. He was then named superintendent at Olton and after four years, took the top job in the Hereford School District. Four years later he came to Baytown. Clark and his wife Tommye, of the Church of Christ, have three children, Johnny a junior at Texas Tech; Jimmy, a freshman at Texas Tech, and Joy, a sophomore at Robert E. Lee.

In his spare time, Clark devotes most of his energies to raising quarter horses. And he spends some time flying since he pilots his own plane.
