Ready for Angela Alton Evening Telegraph Saturday, August 19,1972 A-5 Shortly after she was acquitted of conspiracy charges in Los Angeles, Angela Davis pledged that she would devote herself to freeing all political prisoners. So far Miss Davis has not been heard from, but there is a new and interesting development. The International Affairs Department of the AFL-CIO gave my column wide circulation In four languages and seemingly a copy reached Prague, When in 19B8 the Soviets invaded Prague and dumped the Dubcek government, which had gone too far toward democracy in its advocacy of "socialism with a human face," they did not reinstate the old Stalinists. Instead they turned to Gustav Husak, who had spent some years in Stalinist jails on a trumped-up charge of "Slovakian nationalism." Husak made his peace with t h e Brezhnev Doctrine, assured the Soviets that Alexander Dubcek's "excesses" would be remedied, but simultaneously promised that there would be no return to the old era of purge trials. Suddenly in recent months Husak has launched a massive campaign against the "liberals," one that goes far beyond merely ostracizing them. The secret police are back at work, the magistrates are busy, the political prisons are being renovated. (Twenty- eight "liberals" were sentenced in one recent ten-day period.) Perhaps the most appalling cast is that of Milan Huebl, a former "liberal" member of the Party Central Committee who was sentenced to six and a half years in jail for passing out leaflets informing Czech voters of their constitutional rights. The raps against the Czech dissenters are so palpably bogus that even the French and Italian Communist Parties have emitted cries of anguish. (They are busy trying to achieve "republican respectability." that is, convince their respective countrymen that they can be trusted with power.) But so far we have heard nothing from Angela Davis. Of course, she is well within her constitutional rights in ignoring a request from a "social fascist" like me, but now there is a new precinct reporting. A group of Czech "liberals" — all professing to be good Communists — have called on Angela to come to their aid. I trust she will take the first available flight to Prague. 5 SUPER DRUG CENTERS 323 BELLE ST.
