Section 4 Pages 35-44 ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH Comix Sport Classified Established January 15, 1836. ALTON, ILL., THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 1963 7c Per Copy Member of The Associated Press. Findley Raps Farm News Wire WASHINGTON (AP) - Rep Paul Findley, R-I11., has renewed the Republican attack on the Agriculture Department's market wire service. In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Orville L. Freeman, Findley said the wire service could load to widespread government control of news. "In your new market wire service," Findley wrote, "government employes control the copy from front to back. They do the preparation, the re-write, the editing. They even feed the copy into the wire circuits. Absent is any screening, checking, probing, digging and evaluation by persons independent of government control. "Government employes, by the very nature of their employment, cannot possibly be reporters in the great tradition of the free press. They are writers, not reporters. There's a big difference between dictatorship and freedom." Findley contended fewer propagandists are needed in Washington. "Spoon feeding Washington's press corps from a mountain of press releases is bad for report ers and bad for freedom. Like farmers who get dependent on government checks, reporters get dependent on press releases. Farmers forget how to farm, and reporters forget how to dig for news." Findley also made public a letter to him from Freeman, in which the secretary said the service is not new, is available to all news media and has never competed with private news services. The Illinois congressman has introduced a bill to bar the department from operating a news service in competition * with private business. Freeman, in his letter, said he was surprised that Findley, a weekly newspaper publisher, would advocate legislation "which would restrict public access to information."
