TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 1963 ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH FOOTBALL SPECIAL—PAGE 13 Shells Will Use Winged T Tschannen New Coach At Roxana ' There are two significant changes at Roxana. First, a new coach, Morris (Mo) Tschannen, succeeds veteran Earl McLane. The latter compiled an 87-47-10 (.639) record while head man of the Shells for 17 seasons. The second change finds Tschannen changing Roxana's offense from a single wing to a winged T. Randy Robertson, one of the state's top dashmen, will forego football this season. The rangy junior has covered the 100 yards ' in 10 seconds flat. His loss will be greatly felt for j Tschannen was counting on him at one of the half- [ back spots. | The Shells return thirteen lettermen. Senior end Tom Durham, 175, and senior guard BUI Keller, 180, are the only two returning regulars from last (tea- son's club which finished with an overall mark of 4-4-1 and 3-2 in conference play. Of the eleven remaining lettermen, two are backfleld m<>n. They are junior quarter- inu-k Don Witherow, 155, and another quarterback, senior Ili'-lian! HumlJton, 155. Some linemen returning are Gary Tedrick (G-190- Sr.>, Bob Uetz (T-155- Sr.), Sltip Burgess (C-155- $r.), Larry Joiner (G-150- Sr.), and Jim Sanchez (C- 155-Sr.). j Some of the prospects listed by Tschannen are 160-pound j junior guard Lanny Rhodes;, 205-pound junior tackle Fred! Wiinan; 160-pound senior fullback Dan Moxey, 145-pound senior halfback Del Frailey; ^!5-j)ound junior tackle Gregi Moadors; 155-pound junior end Paul Grouse and 210-pound junior guard Bob Grouse. Last season the Shells had one of their few losing seasons under the- coiiching guidance of McLane. Many of the players last year were juniors. With a year of experience under their belts and some heavy line prospects for the coming campaign, Tschannen's charges could return to their more familiar winning ways. Tchannen served as an assistant to McLane for eight years and is no stranger to the Shell football program. A year ago Roxana scored victories oyer Southwestern, Civic vAgsn&ria!, Highland, and Dupo. Losses to Wood River, Madison, Cahokia, Edwardsville and a tie with Jerseyville gave the Shells an overall 4-4-1 record and 3-2 conference mark.
