They'll Guide Prep Talent ALTON Ralph McClain (center) begins his fifth year as head coach of the Alton Redbirds. He has the best percentage (.764) and the least number of losses (8) of any coach in the immediate area. He is assisted by (from left to right): Jack Tanner, Richard Johnson, Angelo Barro, and Wilfred Buddell. The Redbirds finished second in the Southwestern Conference in 1962 with a 7-2 overall and 5-1 conference slate. Alton opens its season against Quincy Friday night at West Junior High. The Quincy Blue Devils had an off-year in 1962 with a 1-8 record which included a home town loss to Alton, 45-0. The Redbirds then meet Marquette the following weekend. Two additions to the Alton schedule are Decatur MacArthur and Hannibal, Mo. —Don Hayes Photo. MARQUETTE Ron Holtman (right) and his assistant Jack Whelan await Friday night's opening kickoff at Jerseyviile. Holtman is in his ninth season at the helm of the Explorers and owns a 42-25-4 record. The game with Jerseyviile is an innovation in the Explorer schedule. In previous years Marquette opened its season with Hadley Tech of St. Louis. Last year the Explorers tied Hadley, 12-12.—Don Hayes Photo. WESTERN MILITARY Dave Thayer, new Red Raider mentor, poses with his assistants Ed Voss (center) and John Reed (left). The Red Raiders open their season Saturday against Aquinas in Florissant, Mo. Thayer, a graduate of the University of North Dakota, coached last year at Cuylon, Minnesota. He replaces Phil Abromovich as Red Raider head coach. Western posted a 2-6 record in 1962.—Don Hayes Photo. WOOD RIVER Orv Yocum (right) starts his'llth season as head coach of the Wood River Oilers. He is assisted by John Cates (center) and Dean Calvin (left). The Oilers open against Civic Memorial at Bethalto Friday night. A year ago the Oilers got off to a rip-roaring start with a 26-0 victory over Civic Memorial and went on to finish with a 4-5 mark. Wood River has made no changes in its 1963 schedule from a year ago and follows the Bethalto game with away contest against fvoxana and Edwardsville. John Cates coached the line while Dean Calvin is in charge of the sophomores. — Don Hayes Photo. ROXANA Mo Tschannen (right) is the new head coach of the Roxana Shells replacing Earl McLane who took over as athletic director. Assisting Tschannen are Charles Raich (left) and Bill Mygatt (center). Tschannen is no newcomer to Roxana gridiron competition having served as McLane's assistant for the past eight seasons. Raich formerly was head coach at Calhoun High School in Hardin. Roxana opens its season against Southwestern on the Roxana field.—Don Hayes Photo. JERSEY VILLE Joe Jurkanin (right) has the most years of service (12) and the most victories (66) of any coach in the immediate Alton area. Assisting him this year are from left to right: Carl Crawford, -•' Lorin Roberts and Paul McGarvey. Jerseyviile hosts Marquette Friday night. Jerseyviile is the only independent in the immediate Alton area. Its attempt to join the Midwestern Conference last year was thwarted when the six teams voting ended in a three-three deadlock. The Panthers, probably anticipating eventual membership in the league, have replaced Pittsfield with Madison in the final game of the season. Carl Crawford is a new addition to the Panther coaching staff having starred as a prep grid great for Jerseyviile and later as a college standout for the University of Missouri.— Don Hayes Photo.
