Drive OK, Despite Slam BIGGEST GOLDBRICK UMiTED FUND DRIVE 1966 The United Fund drive here was ridiculed to no avail during the past week — as the funds are being collected at a pace which indicates the goal of more than $15,000 will be reached. A barbed arrow in the form of a concrete building block, painted gold with black lettering (as shown here) failed to cause too much concern among officers and workers in the campaign. The gold block was first noticed resting on the south side of the local post office Sunday, Oct. 23, and remained there for a few days before it was picked up and hauled to the office of Clair Blossom, who is heading the drive. Mr. Blossom pointed out that all officers and workers in the United Fund drives here are volunteers — and none receive any pay or commission for their work. (UDM Polaroid Flashfoto) Garrigan Students Offer 'Just Ducky 9 Don Frederick Is Hardware Ass'n. Chairman Here Don Frederick of Algona has been named Kossuth county chairman of the Iowa Retail Hardware "Peanut Days", Nov. Algona, (la.) Upper D«s Moines Tuesday, Nov. 1, 1966 14-19. This was announced today by Arlan Urness, Clarion, regional chairman of the Hardware Association. During "PeanutDays" participating IRH A hardware stores will offer people all the peanuts they can eat, providing they leave the shells on the floor. In return, they will be invited to leave a contribution for the program of the Iowa Association for Retarded Children. A portion of the funds will be allocated to research in the name of the counties taking part. The remainder will be used to promote facilities, training and education Teenage troubles abound in the Garrigan High School production of Donald Payton's "Just Ducky" which was staged Oct. 30 and will be presented again on Nov. 1 at 8 p. m. in the school gymnasium. This three-act comedy gets off to a merry start when Betty Lou (Karen Winkel), the 13- year-old daughter of the family, and her best friend, Bernadine (Jeanne Milder), send a fictitious letter to the local love-lorn column. As a result, the position of Betty's father (Robert Nichols) as head of the citizens' committee Is seriously threatened. Sue Nelson plays the part of the mother, Mrs. Maxwell, who is quite sure gh£ is the head of the house. Glenn Elbert is cast as Wilbur, the 15-year-old son and "atomic bomb" of the family who aspires to be a great writer. Wilbur's buddy, Hercules (Mike Bray), adds to the confusion by appearing in feminine clothing. According to Sister Mary Michael, OSF, the director, "It is good entertainment for the entire family." The supporting cast includes Kathy Plathe as Connie, the 16- year-oia daughter; Jerry Bormann as Craig Moore, Connie's boy friend; Steve Walker as Mr. Moore, Craig's father; Jim Bristow as Del Marshal, a newspaper reporter; Rose Studer as Aunt Mary and Janice Thul as Miss Blayne, editor of the love-lorn column. Production staff members are stage hands Richard Elbert and John Hyink; script reader Betty McGuire; makeup, Sister Mary Alfred OSF, and Sister Mary Ignatius, PBVM; publicity, Sister Mary Maun, OSF. Publicity distribution will be the work of Tony Bormann, Ronald Heinen, Dean Kollasch, Darrell Lentsch, Paul Nelson, Patrick Protham, Larry Reding and Joseph Schmitt. The sophomore class is in charge of ticket sales. Adult tickets are one dollar and children's tickets are fifty cents. Both may be purchased at the door. SHRUB Martin Almquist, Shenandoah, has a Euonymus, or "burning bush" shrub which is more than twice the usual size for such a bush. It measures more than 15 feet in diameter. COCKSCOMB John Putney of Ackworth grew a giant cockscomb in his, yard this summer which grew to a height of 5 1/2 feet and had a blossom 14 inches wide. LuVerne & Bode Farmers Enter Livestock Show CHICAGO, Oct. 25 - Kossuth county is among the Iowa counties from which early entries are reported by the management of the 1966 International Live Stock Exposition, to be held here Nov. 25 to Dec. 3. Dick and Donald Erpelding of Bode, have each entered Angus steers in the Chicago show;Dick in the open classes and Donald in the exposition's Junior Live Stock Feeding contest in which 4-H and F.F.A. boys and girls from many states will compete in showing steers, lambs and hogs they have raised as club projects. Donald's entry was a breed champion winner at the recent Clay County Fair. Duane Hilbert, Marvin Pompe and Dennis Uthof of LuVerne, have listed entries for the Shorthorn steer classes at Chicago; and Dennis Uthof and Lenora Hilbert each has made an Angus entry in the junior classes, both of which were champion winners at the 1966 Kossuth County Fair. The International Exposition will celebrate its 67th anniversary as the country's largest stock show. It will be held here in the 13-acre International Amphitheatre at the Chicago stock yards.
