Council Balks at Change In Lease oil LT. Depot Alton city council member! balked at immediate enactment • of an ordinance. to amend terms of a 20 - year lease to Junior Service League of the former I T. Passenger depot near the foot of Piasa Street Wednesday night. The league has asked omission of a provision whereby the city could breach the lease should (he building site later be required for any public purpose. The League seeks the change so it may be able to borrow $5,000 to 57,000 on a long term arrangement so as to improve the structure to meet its needs. Aldermen Maitland Timmer- miere, Clifford Dabbs, John McConnell, and William H. Warren opposed the change in the lease, recommended by Chairman Newell Allen of the real estate committee, contending a '20- ( year period was too long without I the city being able to recover the i property. As discussirn waned, Warren commented: "It is evident the council opposes such a long lease. We are not actually giving anything away by the lease. But the council already' has set a precedent in franchise discussions against giving long term grants of any sort and for that reason I am opposed to the amendment." Timmermiere suggested offer- ing a 5-year lease. The lease was then laid over to 1 allow time for renewed negotiations. Prohibitionists Ask Repeal of Equal Time Laiv ST.
