NAVIGATION MAPS The frtpRfnt)h still lias a supply of Altoh Lake navigation ttinps of Alton tnto showing ttillenire, Islands, hat-boM, light* rtttd ollirr impoHniit informaUdii tot pleagttfe boat opefatofs. *ns liinps nfc nvnllnbli* at the Tclegfaph Classified Dermft- ineni for 10 cents or 15 cents by mall, Night Bontlng Wliett the suii goes down tli boats begin to thin out on Alto Lake. &y the time darkness be gihs to hide shoreline landmark the pleasure craft hnve virtual! disappeared. No matter how con gested boating is on peak week ends, .the few night - time skip pers virtually have the lake t themselves. Yet there is quite a bit of plea sure in slow and easy boat riding after night falls. Some boatown ers occasionally try an evening boat ride during a bright moon because the shoreline is fairly vis ible and to get bearings, But wha separates the amateurs from th veterans is to go boating in the dark of the moon. On a cloudy night and even during a light rain about all a skipper can make out is the tops of the trees along the shoreline for many long stretches of the lake. Occasional lights from liar bors and buildings are often too far apart to use for use in main taining a safe steady course. Navigation Aids The buoys Coast Guard to mark the maintains navigation channel as well as lighted buoys and lighted shoreline markers to guide the night time skipper However, it is practically impossible during the dark of the moon to see the buoys unless a skipper has a searchlight. It is advisable to keep track o: the unlighted buoys to avoid collision with them. The meta floats weigh about a ton and could damage a boat. By periodically sweeping the area ahead of the boat every few second: or minutes with a search-light depending ujxm boat speed, a skip per can pick out the buoys which have a strip of fluorescent paint around the top. 'The black buoys marking the left side of the channel going upstream have a white reflector strip. The black buoys are flat on top and are also known as can buoys. Boats should pass to the right of them going upstream. Lighted Aids The-red buoys have a red reflector strip around the pointed top. They are known as nun buoys and craft should pass to the left of them going upstream. Of course in coming the downstream, the procedure is reversed. The night navigator may steer a safe course from one blinking lighted shore marker to the next. Although the lighted markers often alternate from one side of the water to the other they also may be along the same shoreline. In that case remain from 75 to 150 yards offshore for safe water. The lighted markers on near black buoys or on the Missouri side blink once every few seconds. The lighted markers near red buoys or on the Illinois side blink twice every few seconds. The problem for skippers in steering from one light to another in the darkness is to avoid collision with unlighted buoys as aforementioned. S(ay In Channel Unless a boatowner knows the vater real well it is best to re- nain strictly in the channel. Many skippers who know the water in the lower end of Alton Lake are complete strangers to the upper stretches. By staying in the channel, a skipper avoids running aground on a sandbar on a dike. After sunset boats must have heir running lights turned on. "Most craft are required only to mve a combination red and jreen bow light and white stern ight. Crimson Satan Duels Kelso At Aqueduct By JOHN CHANDLER Associated Press Sports Writer NEW YORK (AP) - Crimson Satan, one of the season's top handicap horses, is due by plane from Chicago today and is scheduled to hook up with the mighty Kelso Monday in the 5100,000-added Aqueduct Stakes at Aqueduct. If some horse is about to make a serious challenge to snatch horse-ot-the-year honors from Kelso, it's about time to make a big pitch. Kelso, the 6-year-old star from the Bohemia Stable of Mrs. Richard C. duPont, won championship honors for an unprecedented third straight year in 1962, and is leading again in the title scramble. Crimson Satan, who won the 2- year-old crown in 1981, has been all over the country this year and looms as Kelso's chief rival. In his most recent start last Saturday at Arlington Park in Chicago, Crimson Satan came with a rush to capture the $113,150 Washington Park Handictp. It was the fifth big stakes score for Crimson Satan this year in 12 starts. The chestnut son of Spy Song-Papila, owned by the Crimson King Farm of Peter Salmen Sr. of Detroit, has earned $350,855 this year, running his total to 5752,412. The Aqueduct is an allowance event, with weight based on money earned, and Kelso must pack 134 pounds. Crimson Satan has 129. Kelso has been sticking to the East, and has won six of eight races this year, accumulating $331,367 for his efforts. He is the second leading money winner of all time with $1,343,307. The Aqueduct is far from a two-horse race, however. Rex C. Ellsworth's Candy Spots, a candidate for the 3-year-old crown, is u probable starter under 126 pounds, George A. Pope Jr's Decidedly, the 1962 Kentucky Derby winner, and winner of the Monmouth Handicap, has 121. Darby Dan Farm's Chateaugay, 1963 Derby and Belmont winner, would pack 124 if he goes in the l»/ 8 miles Monday. Fenced yard. CL 4-7646. 47 — 31 _— 4 ROOM HOUSE—Built-in kitchen, HWF. oil heat.
