Gains of key stocks ran from fractions to about a point but thqre was a liberal sprinkling of losers. Rails responded with a cautious advance to news of the arbitration agreement iii the rail labor dispute but the possibility of a strike Aug. 29 still remained. Illinois Central was up more than a point. The Milwaukee Rod, Santa Fe and Southern Pacific were among fractional gainers. A one-point gain by Chrysler was the only move of consequence among the major auto stocks. Among the more widely-moving issues, Control Data was up more than 1, IBM 2, Xerox 3 or so and Polaroid more than 4. Gains of about a point were made by Merck, Natidnal Air Lines, Korvelte and Eastman Kodak. Steels were unchanged to easy. Oils, airlines and tobaccos were mixed. Nonferrous melals were IrregUlarly lower. Prices ort the American Stock Exchange were generally higher.
