THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2013 DECATUR, ILLINOIS LIFE D5 www.herald-review.com FDA OKs Botox to treat crow's feet Fighting food allergies with fun McClatchy-Tribune News Service It's getting easier for Baby Boomers to hide their years. Federal regulators for the first time have approved Botox injections to temporarily ease the appearance of crow's feet. The Food and Drug Administration recently approved the drug, made by Irvine, Calif Allergan to treat wrinkles that form on the outside edge of the eyes. The decision comes 11 years after the FDA approved Botox for the temporary improvement of wrinkles between the eyebrows, known as frown lines. Now, Botox can be used to treat frown lines and crow's feet at the same time Botox temporarily paralyzes facial muscles, making wrinkles appear less prominent.

The drug is a purified form of the toxin botulinum. Botox has previously been approved for the treatment of chronic migraine headaches, underarm sweating and eyelid spasms. The wristbands featuring the characters are sold for $6.99 on AllerMates' website. While AllerMates started as an allergy-awareness product, Shamus said her business has grown to include asthma and epilepsy awareness products as well part of her plan to expand her company.

AllerMates announced in April the company would roll out EpiPen, Auvi-Q and asthma inhaler carrying cases as part of National Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month. Shamus said AllerMates has already taken orders on the products and should be shipping out within the next week. "We don't want to just offer allergy products, we want to offer education," Shamus said. "We want to create videos with the characters that will teach kids about their allergies. We could make books but what I really want is to have a whole world of characters for children with these kinds of health McClatchy-Tribune News Service Nanuet, N.Y.

Shamus said she originally tapped into her creative spirit and spent late, anxiety-ridden nights thinking of ways to have her son understand his food allergy, but over time the idea began to expand. "How do you explain to your kid what a food allergy is?" Shamus said.

"I wanted to figure out a way to not only protect kids, but educate them. So I thought about different fun characters who represent different allergies and by doing this, it protects them but also makes the kids feel good about themselves." Starting with characters such as a baseball cap-wearing peanut named Nutty" and a walking milk carton aptly named "Pint," Shamus turned Nanuet, N.Y.-based AllerMates from a manufacturing order in 2009 into a full-time business in 2011 and has watched her late-night passion project become a multimillion-dollar product. A company created four years ago by an Upper Saddle River, N.J., mother worried about her preschooler's food allergies has grown into a multimillion-dollar business that is seeing a healthy boost in sales this back-to-school season. AllerMates, the brainchild of Iris Shamus, sells wristbands, medicine cases, charm bracelets and dog tags emblazoned with cartoon characters as a way of combining food allergy awareness and fun for the 3 million children in the United States affected by food allergies including her son.

The products are sold at national retailers such as Walgreens, Kmart, CVS, Stop Shop and ShopRite, and over the last year, the private company's sales have exploded from $500,000 to more than $2 million, Shamus said. Besides having boosted sales in the retail sector, AllerMates has recently made its way into the national celebrity spotlight as well. In August, Brittney Spears' son attended the premiere of "Smurfs 2" with an AllerMates wristband on each of his arms, and Jacqueline Lau-rita from "The Real Housewives of New Jersey" also purchased autism-awareness wristbands from AllerMates for her son, according to AllerMates' publicist. Consult an Dear Mary: I contacted Tran-sUnion because there is a blatant error on my credit report. It states that I owe the federal government $80,000.

A lien was filed in 1991, and the debt was discharged through bankruptcy in 1998. The Tran-sUnion rep was not very nice on the phone. When I asked why something from 1991 is still on my report, he told me they can keep a lien on indefinitely. What do I do now? Linda, New York Dear Linda: I am not an attorney and cannot give legal advice What I can do is urge you to contact an attorney right away. I am concerned that this hen never was discharged as you were led to believe.

My understanding is you can't discharge a federal tax lien. A Chapter 7 bankruptcy wipes out your personal obhgation to pay the debt and prevents the Internal Revenue Service from going after your bank account or wages. But if the IRS records a tax lien on someone's property before the person files for bankruptcy, the lien will remain on the property. In effect, that means the person has to pay off the tax lien in order to sell the property. For your sake, I hope I'm wrong.

Don't spend and earn Dear Mary: My adult daughter was talking about getting a part-time job (in addition to her full-time teaching job) to earn some extra money. My husband reminded her that "not spending" is really the Now in Two Locations: FALL MOVE-IN SPECIAL! Each year, 100 to 200 people die in the United States from severe food allergy-related reactions, according to the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Jennifer Sherman of Allergy Asthma Consultants based in Saddle River and Riverdale, said she has recommended AllerMates products to many of her patients. She said her patients' parents enjoy the peace of mind the products give by alerting those who might care for their kids to any potential food allergies. "I was blown away, there is nothing like it on the market -and the best thing is, kids want to wear it," Sherman said. "Food allergies are becoming an epidemic, and any product that keeps kids with food allergies safer is something we should support." Today, AllerMates has characters that represent program (with a hefty price tag of that is intended to help you pay off your 30-year mortgage in only 16 years.

This seems too good to be true. I would love to know what you think. Candy, Texas DEAR CANDY: I know about that type of program, and quite frankly, I am not a fan. You can do the same thing without buying any software or exposing yourselves to undue risk. Here's how: Each month when you make your mortgage payment, write out a second check for one-twelfth of one payment.

(If your mortgage payment is $1,200, you'd make out that check and then another, for $100, which is one-twelfth of $1,200.) Write on that second check, "Principal Prepayment Only." At the end of the year, you will have made 13 mortgage payments, with one of them going entirely to reduce the principal. Do this faithfully and you will lop many years and many thousands of dollars in interest from your mortgage payback. I guarantee that your lender will accept the additional payment if you make it at the same time as a regular monthly payment; you will not have to pay a fee for some special payment program. And you can stop anytime without incurring any penalties if you find yourselves in a financial bind. maiyeverydaycheapstate.comEvery-day Cheapskate, Box 2135 Paramount, CA 90723.

By not spending on extras and cutting back where she can, she could keep money in her pocket. She would have to earn at least $1.30 to make up for each dollar spent, by the time the government takes out taxes from her paycheck. I thought this was sensible advice. Lin, Michigan DEAR LIN: Wise advice, indeed.

But more than that, your daughter needs to assess how much that second job would cost in terms of gas, parking, more restaurant and fast food because she's pressed for time, and myriad other job-related expenses that will nibble away at the true value of that second job. Cutting expenses is an effective way to effectively "increase" one's income for the very reason your husband states.
