part of his life In Richmond and In Hanover county was educated in the private school of James Sttotbers until he was' 16 years old then he became a cadet at the Vir ginia Military Institute and graduated from that institution in 1876 studied law at the University of Virginia and graduated with the degree of in 1878 and practiced law In Richmond several years 1 Colonel Ellett never held public of fice until his election to Congress He was for several years a member of the board of visitors of the Virginia Mili tary Institute was presidential elector was a member of the State Democratic committee of fifty for' about twelve years within a part of the time acting as a member of the executive conir 4 mittee of ten Ho was elected to the fifty fourth Congress as a Democrat receiving 11745 votes against 4653 for Southward Republican 1788 for Judge Gregory J'oputist 231 votes for George Smithdeal Prohibitionist and 134 votes for Martin Meredith Lipscomb Independent
