ALTON lUvet' ttl|)|t1c< iititt Outdoors with ttt'nmt A report ott the hunting prospects for this coming fall .Is given by ItoyAt tt. McClolifUitl, executive secretary to the I1H- fiols Federation of Spoilsmen's dlubs, one of the outdoor writers Who will tell about Important topics In the coming week while Harold Brand is on vacation: Optimistic Hunting Report A highly optimistic note Is struck by sportsmen in midsummer^ meetings reporting on the game crop prospects. At an outdoor meeting of the Northern Zone "Division of the Illinois Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs at Little John Conservation Club near Gulesburg, It was unanimous that upland game production was very good up tb this point. Most observers were of the opinion that a dry spring wus the main factor. The pheasant crop looks particularly good with more and larger sized broods of young. Survival rate of young birds has evidently been high as there lias been little drowning or loss from respiratory troubles usually Induced by wet weather. There Is some evidence that, pheasants are enlarging their range to some extent, slopping over into areas where only an occasional bird has been seen in previous years. Dove populations retnaln high and since defeat of legislative attempts to take them off the game bird list," sportsmen are looking forward to a fine season. More Knbblls too Squirrel populations appear to be improved over the last sev- era! years and although this game animal Is not as Important in the northern half of the State as In the southern half, It Is a much sought target In the areas where there are timbered bottomlands. Rabbits appear to have made the most outstanding comeback after several years of lowered populations. From most every section of the northern half of the State .reports Indicate more rabbits arc being seen. Very cautious but optimistic reports are just now coming In from Canada suggesting a slightly improved waterfowl crop. More rain over most of the ,duck nesting areas has improved the hatch. It's pretty evident that word 'of a good deer crop has gotten around for the deer permit office has really been snowed der with applications. Already seven of the top deer hunting counties have been filled for shotgun hunters. GM Sets <_ Earnings Records .
