Shuman of the American Farm Bureau Federation has had many run-ins with Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman since 1961 over farm policies and programs, but he says he has no desire to see Freeman replaced. Here Jto appear before a congressional committee on farm legislation, Shuman told newsmen: "We know where Mr. Freeman stands. We don't know where a successor might stand. Besides, I feel that Mr. Freeman is an able man. We just don't agree on farm 'programs. That's all." Shuman made these comments at a news conference when asked about rumors that Freeman might be replaced. Aides of the secretary have denied that Free•; man—now on a tour of Eastern Europe—is on the way out. "What we would like to see," the Farm Bureau president said, "is a change in drection in Kennedy administration farm policies away from controls toward a free market system." Shuman said he was hopeful . that Congress will enact new ' wheat and feed grain legislation, providing for gradual withdrawal of the government. But he said . that if this did not happen, lie „ did not envision the chaos in next ; year's wheat markets that Freeman had predicted before a new '• control program was defeated at a referendum. ; Shuman predicted that many producers of lower quality wheat will reduce wheat acreages with '. the result that the unrestricted .' 1964 crop might not be any larger 1 than this year's levels, even • though prices supports will drop 'from the present $1.82 to $1.25 ! a bushel. He said low quality ; wheat could be expected to de• cline quite a bit, but not the quality grades needed for food and export use. , Shuman said he believes that time will show tha,t the recent wheat referendum was a major ' turning point in a shift away from . farm controls to a minimum ol government intervention. It gave these details: Dallas News color expert Wai Sisco snapped the photograph on self developing (Polaroid) color Him and obtained a print in one minute, This print was put direct Jy on the News' electronic photo lathe engraving machine and with use ol filters, separate en gravings ol the red, yellow and W»e values in the picture were pr^uce in legs tjian an hour, processes require tw Gallacher Seeking to Quiet Hubub CHICAGO (AP)-Wiitie Galla cher, chairman of (he British Communist party, seems deter rnitied to put a quiet end to th liubub that accompanied his Visi to the United States. Gallacher, 81, arrived in Chica go Tuesday and immediately \ven to see his ailing sister, Mfs. Ag nes Wilson. 75. The Scotsman's attempt to ob tain a visa reached the House o Commons and Secretary of State Dean Rusk before it was success ful. His visa was first issued, then revoked by the United States on the grounds that it had been is sued through an administrative error. Gallacher, a former mem ber of Parliament from Paisley Scotland, enlisted the support ol 50 of 1 his former colleagues, who took the matter to U.S. Ambassador David Bruce in London. Rusk later ordered the visa re issued. When Gallacher arrived in New York, he told newsmen, "You are only allowed to ask about the condition of my sister." Chicago newsmen were brushed aside with: "I'm just here to visit my sister, but outside of that, nothing." He called the controversy 'much ado about nothing." His sister is the wife of ames K. Wilson, a retired em- loye of the International Har- ester Co. Mrs. Wilson's physician Tues- ay denied that she was near eath. He said that because of er age, she had simply failed to ecover rapidly from an opera- on performed a month ago. Gallacher plans to stay and visit ext a nephew, the Rev. John Iraig of Iowa City.
