of Lincoln 0 Madison county candidates for District and State honors covering a period of a quarter of a century He also toM of his personal attachment to the county of Madison by reason of having spent three years of his young manhood at Central University grad uating here in 1887 his brother the latA tiam Helm also of Lincoln having previously graduated hereAfter reviewing the long and distin guished service of Lincoln Democracy to Madisons aspirants tor political pre ferment Mr Helm declared that there wag not and should not be any perso nal or poJitical differences between himself and Hon Gilbert out vrestnt Congressman but that there as a desire throughout the District for otation in the office of Congress man and that he had the solid backing It the county of Lincoln his home county After reviewing Lincolns record of loyalty to Madison and touching upon current topics Mr Helm referred to the fact that Mr Gilbert had now been in I ongress nearly six years and tha so far as committee appointments was an index of a Congpessmans prominence ffficiency or influence the people of the Eighth District should reflect that Mr Albert was practical in the same sarmI isition he held the land famed throughout Christendom for its beautiful women the grand Old Commonwealth of Ken tacky Mr Helms opening speech was frequently interrupted by applause and made a good impression not so much as a studied effort at high flown oratory with Greece and Rome as hip principal text but with the issues of the present and the obligation of Mad ison to return now at this first opportunity the kindness in part to her ever loyal neighboring county of Lincoln Mr Gilbert followed Mr Helm with a good speech in which he touched upon national affairs the tariff the Man on Horseback our irrepressible autocratic President the iniquitous trusts with inevitable ruin and wreck age of our Republic unless we return to the simplicity of the Fathers and the fundamentals of the Constitution and Declaration of Independence Mr Gilbert then took up Mr Helms reasons for desiring to go to Congress and ridiculed the idea of a crusty bachelor askIng a district to send him to Washington so he could get him a wife declar JOg that he Gilbert wanted to return to Congress not for the honor but for the chalice to do his district some good As to Mr Helms claims upon Madieon for the support of Lincoln to our candidates for Governor Senator Congressman Auditor etc Mr Gilbert said that his county of Shelby was always depended upon to supply the majority that finally won those honors and that his county and Anderson and Spencer had been placed in this district to ensure It tothe Democracy He declared though it must be contested with questionable policy that eon if Lincoln had supported Madi son candidates the latter were always of such a high class as to merit the support of Lincoln Mr Gilbert then turned his attention to Mr Helms mild aspersions upon his lack of influ slice and services in Congress and ex plained that he had been hampered in his first term by a content for his seat by his Republican opponent Davidson which hung over his head like the sword of Damocles and to that extent trammeled him He alleged that he had herured an increase of 20000 or 25000 for the completion of the Gov ernment building at Richmond and now had a bill up for 10000 to be refunded to the county of Madison from the Treasury This latter bill he declared no new Congressman could pilot to a winning finish and hoped Ins hearers would remember that when a case of importance was up in court the clients were always loth to exchange their old lawyers for new ones Mr Gilbert spoke nearly his full time and as the rain began to descend in torrents almost drowning his voice he resigned his place on the floor to Mr Helm for the latters rejoinder ot fifteen minutes Mr Helms second speech was entire ly different from his openin He came back at Mr Gilbert with vigor and upset the Congressmans calculations and claims as to his preemt nence In Congress Mr Gilbert had stajed that he remained Washington up to the closinsrhours of Congress and left for home within two hours whereas Mr Helm produced the Congressional Record to show that Mr Gilbert was not present on that day As to his influence Mr Helm cited a well known incident that when the citizens ot a cer thin locality in Rockcastle petitioned him for a postouice instead of being made to go ten miles for their mall Mr Gilbert had failed to secure it At this juncture Congressman Gilbertarose and responded When Mr Helm shall have served in Congress as long as I have he will learn that under a Repulican administration i Democrat has little or no influence in such matters Nevertheless retorted Mr Helm When a Democrat in tho person of Hon James McCreary put his shoulder to the wheel he got the postoffice without anybodys outside in fluence This was received with loud cheers and enlivened the occasion Mr Helm produced receipts to show his contributions to the success of Mad ions several county candidates in the county of Lincoli and in he district while he il clanil Mr Gilbert had been ungenerous in hid contributions to even his own campaign in Madison county allowing it to fall heavily upon the local candidates candidatesBoth were liberally applauded and the friends of both were well satisfied with their efforts As this was Mr Helms first public appearance here he received the more critical in spection and accordingly launched into hw subject with moderation and dignity but yet with a confidence and familiarity with public debate that was reaseurixgto his supporters In hdbpUie hdbpUieMr Mr Brooks who was in the drug drugbnsineaa burines here for thirty years and later In Vanceburcand other
