the field of bloody triwgc and in the councils of the gruatest nation on the earth His first trance into public life was as a representative iu the Legia latu of this his native State that boasts nf the i anis of flay Critton Ion Marshall and Breckinridge in her galuxy of ilnsrious statesmen Soon aftor becoming member his marked ali liy was cgni upon every hand and he was elected to the Speaker gross of the nation which he did with the same earnestness and steadfat ness of purpose that has always char aicrized his actions in the discharge nf his public duties From this po ilion he was elected to represent the granl old Commonwealth in the most august parliament that has ever de cided the destinies of nations or changed the chronology of the world The VicePresident is simply the Speaker of the Senate and we know of nn one who could fill that position with more grace and dignity than this 1 eloquent impressive and diplomatic citizen of the county of Madison and Senator from the proud but hospita bo stale of Kentucky James Mc I Creary From Danville News COLONEL TUCKeR former Uni ted States Minister at Martinique be 1 eves be has found the lost tribe of Israel in a race of people who live in inI an underground city in Central Amer lea These people have evidences of I luxury are well acquainted with the Masonic Ritual I A Statement Concerning Madison Institute There is a crisis in Madison Institute nnd 1 feel that it is my duty to inform the citizens of Midison count ol this fict It is well known tbat for the last fifteen years the school nut been a financial success Havi gno endowment fund the school like other female colleges is dependent for support on the income from the board and tuition of its stu dents The present session has been a prosperous one in every respect except in the matter of finance Toe work and the anxiety and feeling of responsibility involved in it are so great that a man soon tires of it when there is little ur no money to be made at it and now after three years of earnest effort it is perfect evident unit unless the financial skies grow brighter in ttii near future I will be compelled to give it upliS my prede russiirs did And if I give it up Madison Iiiotitiiie will become a thing of the past for no man in his senses would take it with tile expectation of making it pay after three others had given it a fair trial extending through fifteen years and failed Anyone who would be foolish enough to undertake it then would Hot be capable of making a success of anything roe only remedy in the case is more loyalty to the school on the part of the people of this community shown by more hearty support and un increase of patronage if the peo ple feel enough interest in it to apply this remedy its continuance id lill I toured There are a number of boys and girls in this county now receivIng elsewhere instruction that Madi ton Institute affords who if enrolled iu this school would increase its Income sufliieatly to make the insti tution reismablo profitable I have decided to remain another year and nee whether our citizens care enough for it to do this and keep it alive I have heard a number of persons say that If the people had known in time ihu true condluon of Ceu ral Unlvers iiy theywould Ijave come to the escuu and kept it in Richmond and thy censured those in authority for I not letting the facts be known As I oo not wish to be deserving of such censure I am now making known in advance tho tree state of affairs concerning Madison Institute leaving it to them to decide what its fate shall I This is the only female college in Kentucky wh se teachers are grad uates of Chicago University the University of Micntgan Ann Arbor and others of the worlds greatest school I say this deliberately for it is true And this accounts fur another fict namely that it Is the only school in IbIS State whisu graduates enter the great institutions of the north and caLt such as Wellnsley and Vassar without exauiinaton This is a priv privilege nl tile Unto river known to me and I make it my business to keep informed bout such matters Is not this a ae proud distinction for Richmond Can SIOO Reward The readers of tins paper will be pleased to learn that there Is at least one dreaded disease that science has een able to cure in all its stages and that is Catarrh Halls Catarrh Curt is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity Catarrh being a constitutional disease requires a constitutional treatment Halls Catarrh Cure is taken internally acting directly upon the blood and mucous surfaces of the system thereby destroy lug the foundation of the disease and giving the patient strength by building tip the constitution and assisting nature in doing its work Tho proprietors have so much faith in tiiJMet 3m C1 this county afford to lose suchan institution just for the want of sum dent patronage It may occur ti some to raise the qnesion Why does not Madison Institute If its facnlity is superior to that of other schools receive a larger patronage from a distamcc The answer is easy The chief reason is that Richmond is mewhat isolated and is not a accessible as some other school town Lexington for instance which is a railroad center and many think without an reason that the larger the town the better the school forgetting if they ever knew it that some of the gieatest universities are in comparatively small places Men have told me that they regard Mad i Institnte as the best female col IcgM in the State but that they prefer to send their daughters to Lexington simply because their business takes them to that town about once a month and gives them an opportunity to visit their daughters and return home the same day which they could not do if they sent them to Richmond where their business never requires them to go Madison Institnte with its superior advantages ought really to receive a liberal endowment from the people of thi community but all its aska is their liberal patronage Surely thi is not an unreasonable request All that your children need in the matter of a firstclass education can be obtained here at very reasonable rates Do they need music Our teachers In this department received the most thorough training at the leading music conservatories of this country and Europe and have chown by th ir thorough and painstaking work that they have no superiors This is evident to all who attend the splendid recitals given by their pupils from time to time Do they need arti We employ as instructors in tbis de partment only those who were edsea tpdIt the leading art schools of II America Have you small boys If you send them here they will be in sructed by teachers of long and soc cessful experience in rooms that arc not crowded and they will not Imposed on hy large and rough boys and will not be thrown with evil associates who are older and from whom so much that is bad and in jurious is soon learned Again I ask is Madison county willing to
