from last Thursday night when they had already nominated their delegates ana alter nates to the state convention A bitter feeling now exists between the two factious and as there are now two sets of delegates elected to ask for recognition in Roanoke next Tuesday a lively contest can be expected The meeting held las night was per fectly harmonious and the matter placed before the asemblage was dispensed A with In a business like manner Mr Claud Murdaugh called the meet ing to order advising that It was an ad journed meeting from last Thursday i night1 Mr Pope nominated Capt Ju lian Pace to be chairman of the meeting and he as unanimously elect ed and ascended the rostrum amid ap plause and loud cheers Captain Pace expressed his regrets to the gentlemen present on account of the wrangle at last meeting and said that he had hoped that the meeting at that time would have been harmonious Mr II Butt Jr nominated Mr NV King as secretary of the meet 1 ing and he was unanimously elected i i Mr Claud Murdaugh nominated Mr Riley and Mr Williams nominated Mr Wilson to be dele gates to the state convention and on motion of Mr II Butt Jr the noml nations were closed and those gentle men were elected Mr Riley In accepting the nomina tion said that in view of the dlsagree ment at last Thursday's meeting and to guard against any attacks that this meeting was being conducted by per sons who had no right to participate in a repubNcan assemblage that they had following certificate which each and very person would be re quired to sin and make affidavit be loro a notaik public before he could take part in tie meeting: "I hereby cerNfy That I am a duly qualified voter nj the city of Ports mouth Va that at the last national election I cast my vote for Roosevelt and airbanks that I was present at a mass meeting of republicans held in St hall Portsmouth pursuant to call of the city executive committee Thursday evening July 27 1905 and that I voted In the affirmative on the motion to adjourn said meeting to Tues day evening August 1 that I was pres ent at said adjourned meeting and voted for Riley and Wilson for delegates to the republican state con vention to be held In the city of Roa noke August 8 "We only want staunch republicans to vote here said Mr Riley "but If there are any who have not voted the republican ticket In the past but who desire to cast their lot with us In the future he can participate with us tonight We do not want anybody to vote tonight who will not support the principles which we On motion Messrs William Crlsmond and Thomas Minton were appointed tellers and the vote being taken re suited in 117 ballots being cast of which 15 were deposited by colored men Mr Harry Minton a notary public swore the electors as they came forward and deposited their ballot While the tellers were counting the ballots Mr airless addressed the meeting and after paying his respects to the press which he said had mis quoted him last JMday morning he said that he was not a qualified voter in this state much to his regret as he had been absent from the state for a num ber of years but was glad to be able to say that during that time he had voted In Pennsylvania
