Gibson, 35, of Gran ilo City, has been appointed secretary-treasurer of. the Illinois State AFL-CIO, it was announced today by Reuben G. Sodcrstrom, president o£ the 1,200,000-member organization. Gibson was appointed by t h e executive board at a meeting in Chicago Thursday, to fill the un- cxpjred term of the late Maurce T. McElligott. Since the merger of the Illinois State Federation of Labor and the Illinois Industrial Union Council (CIO) in 1958, Gibson has been on the staff as director of community services activities. Prior to the merger he was employed as staff representative of the Illinois Industrial Union Council (CIO). He is a member of the United Steelworkers of America International Union. He served 3% years as financial secretary of Steel- svorkers' Local No. 16 while employed at the Granite City Steel Falling Iron Pipe Injures Olin Man A heavy iron pipe "fell on the lead of Calvin Reynolds Jr., 21, early this morning at the East Alton Plant of Olin Mathieson, in- ilicting three lacerations on h i s head. Reynolds, who lives in VVilson- ville, a loader in the cast shop, was working on a large wooden skid when the accident occurred at 2:15. The young man was taken to Alton Memorial Hospital for treatment. Physicians at noon said the man was in good condition. Storm Death Toll Rising in Italy BRESCIA, Italy (AP)—A cloudburst in this north Italian area early today brought death to at least five persons, raising to 13 the three-day toll in a series of scattered summer storms over Italy.
