Methodists To Celebrate At Du Quoin DU QUOIN — Soul horn Illinois Methodists — 8,000 strong — Sat urday will gatiier at Du Quoin State Fairgrounds tor the second annual Methodist holiday, a unique evangelistic service echoing the revival fervor of Methodist camp meetings in Illinois in the 1800s. Activities will begin at 2:30 p.m. and for the next seven hours Methodist families and friends will be treated to "an adventure in re ligion" of preaching, hymn sing ing and family competition. Board of lay activities of the Southern Illinois Conference, covering 39 counties in the lower third of Illinois, is host to the second annual event which last year attracted 4,000 persons. Keynoter of the day is Loehlo Cast, state director of Dale Carnegie courses in North Dakota where he is director of lay speaking for Methodist churches. Cast will speak at 2:45 p.m. Bishop James Walton Henley, episcopal leader of the Methodist Jacksonville Area, Fla., will preach the first of two sermons at 3:45 p.m. Sermon title "Lay men Are Ministers, Too." He will preach on "How Far — the Kingdom" at 8:30 p.m. Bishop Henley's area includes Cuba where communism is confronting Christian stewardship. He is expected to relate the story of Methodism in Cuba under Castro. Illinois Area Bishop Edwin Edgar Voigt in a general invitation to the public to attend the holiday called it a day for "physical and spiritual refreshment." Dean Bartle, Pinckneyville, and Everett Thompson, conference lay leader, are co-producers of Methodist Holiday. Afternoon activities will include a 35 minute program of Methodist hymn singing keyed to the Wesley tradition. Leaders of the S.OOO voice chorus are Dr. James R. Houghton and Earl E. Harper, interpreters of sacred music or the church. Dr. Houghton will )e soloist and director of music 'or the holiday. Harper will be •accompanist. Court Rejects Appeal of Latham, York DENVER (AP)—A federal appeals court turned down pleas Wednesday by George York, 19, and James Latham, 20, convicted murderers accused of slaying seven persons—two in Illinois—in a .7 : day crime spree from Florida o Utah two years ago. They are under sentence to die or the murder of Otto Ziegler, 63-year-old railroad worker at Oakley, Kan. Their hanging at the Kansas 'enitentiary was set for July 19, but the three judge U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Denver granted them 90 days to petition the U.S. Supreme Court. The two are accused of fatally hooting a motorist, Albert E. teed, 35, of Litchfield, III., near Edwardsville June 8, 1961, and of atally beating a service station operator, Martin Drenovac, 69, of ranite City, 111., the same day. Roy Cook, their attorney, said n Kansas City, Kan., he will file he appeal. The Denver court re ected his contention the two young soldiers were denied legal counsel at their arraignment in <ansas after they were -irrested at Grantsville, Utah, June 10, 961. York is from Jacksonville, Fla.; -aiham from MauriceviHe, Tex. Their murder trial was conducted in Russell County, Kan., on a change of venue from Sharon Springs. Their escapade started after they escaped from the stockade at Fort Hood, Tex. They also are accused of slaying- two women in Florida, a man in Tennessee, two men in Illinois and an 18-year-old waitress at Craig, Colo, "We thought as long as we killed one we might as well keep on," York was quoted after their capture. The first victim they left for dead recovered. Jersey Boy, 10, Injured in Fall JERSEYVILLE —Dennis Bowers, 10, son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard Bowers of Jerseyville sustained a fracture of the right forearm Tuesday afternoon when he fell while playing hall at the Lions Park. He was treated at the Jersey Community Hospital and released. John Hodell, 4'/a, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rodell Sr. of Fidelity, was running at home Tuesday evening and fell against a lawn chain lacerating his right eye. The wound required sutures which were taken at the Jersey Community Hospital. Mrs. John Strebel of Brighton sprained her right ankle when she stepped into a hole in the yard of her home Tuesday afternoon. She was given treatment at the Jersey Community Hospital.
