50 The Terre Haute Tribune-Star Sunday, December 3, 1961. Duke Roars Back to Beat Notre Dame, 37-13 has replaced baseball as our I national sport, George Preston Marshall declares The owner of the Washington Redskins ftaid he has suspected this for quite a while, but was convinced when he discovered relief pitch- ers being transported from bull pen to mound by jeep, scooter or automobile. a sport, desperate for a speed up and gasping for pep, becomes dependent upon gasoline power, it is plainly no challenge to football as the national Marsh a 11 comments in the current issue of The Saturday Evening Post. Marsh a 1 i views are aired in a article in which he finds that the World Series does for baseball once a year what a GEORGE MARSHALL routine schedule does for football every week during the fall, the playing field baseball is a bloodless, unemotional spectacle compared to Marshall observes. "The very nature of the football uniform is exciting.

It suggests the to nian combat. All They Do Is Talk is mostly a jawing contest. There is usually chronic bellyaching on the field argue often in football, but when they do, it usually results in punches or in helmet Marshall puts the rap on bonuses, on the player draft, on the long season and on Little Leagues. He believes no other sport offers a challenge to football either. Golf is seen as a game of hitting the ball and walking after it.

bowling is a in which the participants wear the "shabbiest clothing in sports, tennis is the public about basketball or its scandals and boxing has itself. Football? Marshall says it and no other is our national pastime. Buckeyes Staying at Home Ohio Faculty Council showed inconsistency in voting against the Buckeyes making the trip to Pasadena, for the Rose Bowl game. The 28 faculty members who vetoed Ohio participation in the postseason extravaganza could be commended for their stand because college football has become big business, not a recreational adjunct to education, but consider the cold facts behind it and you know none of these anti-members will come up smelling like roses. In the first place, there not only was a split in the vote of the Faculty Council but there was one in the University Athletic Council, whose report the Faculty Council was to approve or disapprove.

Arc ii ltd mosto If this is the case, and it was, even the high and mighty educators and leaders are undecided and quite a few of them so sure that a trip to the Rose Bowl adds to the tinge which has been wrapped around that stadium in Columbus, Ohio. Second, Ohio State stayed away from the postseason they've played in the Rose Bowl four times and as late as just three years ago. Third, the Ohio State biggies accepted their share of the gate for last game when Minnesota represented the Big Ten in the Pasadena spectacular. Fourth, the old saw about prolonging the season and much hurting the academic standards of the university hardly holds true when you consider that there are a dozen Bowl games, with fine colleges participating, and such outstanding universities as Michigan, Michigan State, Purdue, Minnesota, Indiana and Iowa seeing nothing wrong in it. Backed Original Agreement Ohio faculty leaders voted for the original Rose Bowl agreement in 1946 and for the next 12 years, as continued to pour out winning teams, it was fine and dandy to appear.

Now, some of the educators, and an even bet they want seats on the 50-yard line for all those home games, decide that Bowl participation the university. kidding who? If the members of the Faculty Council who voted against the Bowl participation wanted to be consistent, ban football altogether, for, face it, this a minor part of any college curricula, but big business. And not only at Ohio State, although football is accented more here than in many of the other major schools. The inconsistency of the stand is accented by their okay of the Buckeye basketball team, also a big business proposition, playing in postseason tournaments and participating in a schedule which includes three times as many games as the footballers are permitted to indulge in. Recreational Outlet? The old malarkey about football being a part of a education in college is for the birds.

all for it, to be sure, but when only a handful play, and they are hand-picked by recruiting and enticing, and they start their education three weeks before school opens, work at it every day including Saturday afternoon and travel all around the country, how can anyone call this a recreational outlet? Major college football today is big business. the bread and butter for most of the athletic program, and especially for the coach who exhorts his boys to go out and win for Old State and particularly himself and provides entertainment, not education, for millions of fans. One feels kinda sorry for the players, who certainly earned a vacation in California after a long season. It would seem to us that those Faculty Council members who voted against the Bowl biz ought to take an extended vacation themselves. President Kennedy for Navy PHILADELPHIA, Dec.
