On Trip East CARROLLTON — Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Skaggs and sons, James and John, left Wednesday on a trip east in which they will visit their son and brother, Eugene Skaggs, who is a member of the faculty of the Annapolis Naval Academy. (AP)—A 'ederal judge has denie-; a re quest for a writ of habeas corpus 'or James D. Latham and George York, convicted slayers sen- enoed to he hanged Thursday. The two former soldiers are accused of slaying seven persons, ncluding two from Illinois, dur- ng a cross country crime rampage two years ago. The writ application was denied by Judge Arthur J. Stanley Jr. in U.S. District Court. Counsel for Latham and York said ihey would seek a stay of execution pending an appeal of Judge Sfmv ey's ruling. The two men are scheduled to )e hanged for the slaying of Otto Siegler, an Oakley, Kan., railroad man, on June 9, 1961. They were not tried in connection w'th the other slayings. Latham and York are accused of fatally shooting Albert E. Reed, 35, of Litchfield, 111., near Idwardsville on June 8, 1961. They were accused of fatally beating Martin Drenovac, 69, a ranite City service station oper ator, later the same day. York, 19, is from Jacksonville, Fla., and Latham, 20, is from Mauriceville, Tex. They had escaped from the Fort Hood, Tex., stockade before the crime spree began. The other slayuigs were n Florida, Tennessee and Colorado. (AP) — A rototype of the Echo II Communications Satellite—an inflated alloon 135 feet in diameter—was emonstrated Thursday by the National Aeronautics and Space .dministration. NASA is conducting two to three wpeks of tests on this balloon before launching the Echo II later this yrar from Vanderberg Air Force Base, Calif. Ceres is the largest of the minor planets. It has a diameter of about 427 miles.
