PAGE THIRTY-SBC ALTON EVENING TELEGRAPH WEDNESDAY, JUNE 12, 1963 WHAT ARE THEY DOING? Well, at this time they are tabulating the results of a Health I survey in Alton High summer school. Gerry Brown, Lynn Varner and Sherry Brown are checking the votes of class (no relation) school as to members at Gilson Brown likes and dislikes. Band Program Starts Monday at County Seat Baby-Sitters To Raise Church Fund ROSEWOOD HEIGHTS—Members of the Women's Society of Christian Service of St. Paul's Methodist Church have announced starting of a baby-sitting service in the church to raise money for the church building fund. Women will baby sit in the church for people bringing children there at a cost of 40 cents per hour per family. The service wil loperate from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m two days a week Thursdays anc Saturdays. The baby sitting project, of which Mrs. James Goss is chairman, will start Thursday at 9 a.m. It has been requested that parents bringing children who will stay all day bring a sack lunch for the child. Drinks will be provided. Republicans Hit Kerner's BuildingPlan SPRINGFIELD, 111. (AP) Complaints by Republican senators that Gov. Kerner's "build now, pay later" program asked them to write a $66 million blank check put Democrats on their mettle today to fill in blanks. Republicans demanded that Kerner's spokesmen in the Senate Executive Committee justify the capital building projects and set dollar limits on each. Lawmakers must declare to the Illinois Building Authority that the projects are in the pub. lie interest before the authority can draw plans for university, penitentiary, mental health slruc- tures, armories, and state park facilities. Then, to give the building authority a base for issuing revenue bonds, the legislature would appropriate to state agencies slated to use the structures the rents needed for two years. Kernel- told the legislature in his budget message the purpose of the plan was to spread the costs of buildings over their many years of use instead of saddling one two-year budget with the total cost of a building. When the Executive Committee voted 13-10 against the proposal, Sen. W. Russell Arrington, R-Evanston, led opposition. He said Kerne r's administration brought the bill in late, cut out dollar ceilings on projects arid failed to justify each project. "How do we know it is in the public interest to acquire land for Lake Le-Aqua-Na State Park?," he asked. Kerner spokesmen answered complaints that other senators did not see their state parks mentioned by saying the State Park Division determined eligibility. Sen. Everett Peters, R-St. Joseph, criticized the program for tardiness, but said he supported it because of needed University of Illinois buildings in it. Sen. Dennis Collins, R-DeKalb. said the program provided only $5 million for universities under the Teachers College Board, compared to $14 million and $lb million respectively for the; University of Illinois and Southern Illinois University. EDWARDSVILLE - Rehearsals for the summer school band >rogram in Edwardsville School District 7 will get under way Monday, it was announced today by Cleaon Etzkorn, district instrumental music coordinator.
