Mason had practiced law in Decatur since 1936, following his graduation from the University of Illinois.

At one time an active and often successful criminal lawyer, his career had been in eclipse in recent years and he had often become embroiled in controversy and unsuccessful attempts for elective office, including judicial posts. In 1965 the Illinois Supreme Court suspended for one year his license to practice law on grounds he had acted in a manner to bring the administration of justice into disrepute. That action came as the result of a lawsuit filed in 1963 by Mason against Judge Rodney A. Scott and other local judges, seeking $4.5 million damages. In ordering the suspension, the Supreme Court said the suit was not filed for the purpose of obtaining damages, but in an effort to discredit the judiciary.

The suit was later dismissed. Mason served in the Air Force from 1941 to 1946 and held a commission as a colonel in the Air Force Reserve. Funeral arrangements were uncertain Monday night. The Weather FORECAST for Tuesday 50. 20 COOL Macon County Broadhacker Benjamin Frank Broadhacker, 68, of E.
