Fran Tarkenton Changes Super Bowl Preparation La Crosse Tribune, Friday, January 3, BLOOMINGTON, Minn. Minnesota Viking Fran preparation for the upcoming Super Bowl match with the Pittsburgh Steelers is markedly different from last year when the Vikings fell to Miami. He said the hardest part is waiting out the two-week interval following the National Conference championship game with Los Angeles. been on a routine for 21 weeks now a game a said Tarkenton. "Now an extra week.

What you do with your head in that idle time and what you do to pump it up again is significant. "Last year I went to Atlanta, said howdy to my aunts and cousins and friends. I think it sort of discombobulated me. not sure if I ever got my mental edge back. "This year, I go to the training room every day.

I take a little steam bath, go out on the field and run a little. I like the feeling of walking down those halls. It's comfortable. I unwound from the season. For me.

I think it's The 34-year-old quarterback continued: "I think as awed by the Super Bowl as I was last year. The thrill of getting there is just as great, but now not enough to get there. The only real satisfaction is winning it far as the team goes, we really think we re at the top of Fran Tarkenton our Tarkenton said. we do have a better team than a year ago, better defensively and a lot sounder offensively. "Our defense went through injuries unbelievable in the middle of the season.

They were decimated. Now they are well. I think there is a defense in football that is playing as well. "One position can make a difference," Tarkenton said. "Last year we lost John Ward and Milt Sunde at guard.

We played with Frank Gallagher not putting him down, but he played with us. Now we've got Ed White and Andy Maurer. "Our offensive line has come on and come on until it's far and away the best ever played with It is playing magnificent Tarkenton said. getting the finest fullback play this team has ever had from Dave Osborn and the finest halfback play ever from Chuck Foreman. Last year Chuck was a rookie and he was hurt about the ninth or 10th game.

I think he was ever quite the same again. Gilliam is healthy now and you know what he can do. With Jim Lash we've got an established wide receiver opposite Gilly. You can do all kinds of different things because of that. Stu Voigt is better established at tight Tarkenton said.
