Thursday evening Beaufort (Bazette 'L" educational building Volume 84 Number 216 14 Pages Thursday ebruary 26 1981 Beaufort South Carolina 29902 15 Cents Per Copy School building advisory group claims frustration By DAVID BUSHMAN writer A advisory council is frustrated after attempts to find out what role it should play in the Beaufort County Board of Education's building program the chairman said Wednesday anxious to support the school board and the superintendent on the building program but when we have calls from citizens in the com munity who want to know our role we have an said Maury Pilver chief executive officer of a local credit union know what our role Pilver said ormation of the advisory council was a demand submitted last year by the Voters for Accountable School Management a group that filed suit against the board in 1979 to stop the building program The board though planned to appoint an ad visory council before the group said it drop the suit unless a committee was appointed The frustration already has con tributed to the resignation a valued Pilver told the school board Tuesday night members of the group may be losing interest getting harder for us to get Island resident Brent Kuhnle whose background is in building construction resigned from the nine member council last week Reached Wednesday afternoon Kuhnle said comments about his resignation would have to come from Pilver or school board Chairwoman Dorothy Gnann Mrs Gnann said Kuhnle felt advisory council perhaps has not been given enough direction from the The board not without for the advisory feeling that it has not received adequate direction Mrs Gnann said Pilver though said are not attacking or criticizing the school board Our intent is to ask again for more direction trying to get the school board to tell us exactly what to do fulfill the role they want us to An expanded role is not being sought Pilver said if our role is to be purely in a consulting on call basis not sure we can sustain the interest of the entire group" The board should address the question of defining the exact role of this Pilver said A response to memo to the board already has been written Mrs Gnann said advisory council is a vital link between the community and the board" she said can provide us with valuable expertise and ex perience and we certainly want to utilize The role is to review the building program plans and advise the board on what actions to take Mrs Gnann said The hiring two weeks ago of a project director to review construction of all projects should help eliminate problems with the council Mrs Gnann said Copies of all correspondence from the project director will be sent to the council she said Island condemnations prepared While the board wrestles with the problem of a (See GROUP page 14) Action tine Call 5244162 Stain remover recall friend of mine told me that Johnson Wax has announced a recall on their stain remover Dies ACTIONLINE know if this is true? market The independent station would be based in Hardeeville with its transmitter near the northern end of St Helena Island said Robert Pearlman president of Business and Coalition Broad casterslnc The unusual arrangement is intended to satisfy a mix of federal regulations and technical restrictions said Pearlman a Charleston attorney Independent UH station sought Thecorporation has applied for an CC license to broadcast on UH channel 28 and the station can be in operation no sooner than late this year Pearlman said Wednesday Programming would be similar to independent WTBS in Atlanta but with more emphasis on area news sports and in formation programs Pearlman said The station would fill a programming gap as well as offer sponsors full market coverage of the Lowcountry he said Station
