considering the advisability of lowering the level of the canal for a distance of 18 miles on the Lockport and Tonawanda level thus eliminating the present dam at Tonawanda and permitting vessels to pass from the Niagara river to Lockport before encountering a lock level can be lowered alx feet for the additional cost of $80000 In case the plan Is finally adopted It will permit the use of that portion of the Niagara river and land fronting It from Tonawanda to the Sloop lock at Buffalo a distance of nine miles for harbor and terminal purposes making one of the best harbors If not the best 1904 killed James Redding and Charles Purdy at the Guadeloupe placers was hanged yesterday at Taos a few hours after being found In his cell with his throat cut The wound which had been Inflicted with
