2 ALAMOGORDO (MM) DAILY NEWS Wednesday, July 5, 1972 Al Hurlers Hold Batter's Fireworks In Check Orioles Grab League Lead By HERSCHEL NISSENSON Associated Sports Writer Three comeback pitchers, two rookies and one 20-game winner kept the July 4 fireworks to a minimum in the American League Tuesday. Dobson, one of four 2-game winners last season, hurled the Orioles into sole possession of first place in the American League East with a three-hit, 11-strikeout 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox. skidded into second place when Kansas Roger Nelson, fighting back from two years of arm miseries, blanked the Tigers 1-0 on four hits for his first complete game and first triumph as a starter since 1969. Rookie Lynn McGlothen notched his first major league triumph with a three-hitter that propelled Boston past Minnesota 2-0. a 1 a Blue Moon Odom, recuperating from a 1971 elbow operation, posted his sixth victory with eight-inning help from Darold as the downed the New York Yankees 4-2.

Lonborg, the Cy Young Award winner with Boston in 1967 but a much-injured hurler since, won his fourth straight baseball game for Milwaukee. blanking California until the ninth when Frank Linzy came on to preserve a 4-2 triumph rookie Dick Tidrow took over for the injured Mike Kilkenny in the third inning and completed a 2-0 shutout over Texas. In the National league, Cin- nnnati defeated St. Louis 6-1, Houston blanked Pittsburgh 6-0, the New York Mets shaded San I )iego 2-0 but dropped the nightcap 4-2, Montreal trimmed Los Angeles 7-3, San Francisco edged Philadelphia 2-1 and Atlanta turned back the Chicago Cubs 5-1 before the second game was halted by rain in the eighth inning tied at 3-3. Dobson surrendered a first-inning home run to Dick Allen and second-innings singles to Rick Reichardt and Mike Andrews but kept the White Sox hit less thereafter.

The Orioles lied the game against Stan Bahnsen in the fifth on Bobby single and Dave triple and scored the winning run in the sixth on consecutive singles by Paul Blair, Boog Powell and Merv Rettenmund. Kansas City got Nelson the run he needed against Detroit the first inning on Amos bunt single, a stolen base and John May infield hit, which loser Bill Slayback threw wild to first base. McGlothen, a car-old right-hander, held Twins to Eric double in the second inning and singles by Danny Thompson in the third Rookie shortstop Juan Beniquez accounted for one of the runs off loser Ray Corbin with his first major league homer. (AP) Bob Silvers ran his Camaro off the twisting mountain road twice but even remember where after winning running of the annual Pikes Peak Hill Climb.

Bannister, a graduate of New Hampshire who stands 6 feet 3 and weighs 10 pounds less than his normal 200 today, captured the U.S. Olympic Trials decathlon Tuesday with 8.120 points, the top total in the world this year.
