Mary Esther Gray MURPHYSBORO Mary Esther (Chancey) Gray, 79, of Carterville, passed away at 9:57 p.m.

Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, in Heartland Regional Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Pettett Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with Pastor Phillip Ball officiating. Burial will be in De Soto Gray Cemetery.

Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday and until 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Esther was born on July 13, 1926, in Granite City, to Harry A. Chancey and Miriam (Walker) Chancey.

She was married to Mr. Gray for 27 years and after they parted, she found her true love in William (Bill) Watkins of Carterville. She was a graduate of Vergennes High School. Mary Esther was a Christian who loved the Lord, believing her name was well-chosen. Esther loved her weekly luncheon dates with her special sisters-in-law, Maneeta Smith and Gladys Chancey.

She liked to work in her yard and loved to tend to her plants. She collected angels and bells. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and she was a very hard-working and loving person, who cared for those who lived around her. She gave of her heart, all that she had. Survivors include seven children and their spouses, Richard "Frog" and Brenda Gray of Johnston City, Jan Jay of Denver, Kathy and Kenneth Warren of Olympia, Roger and Vickie Gray of Carterville, Ezra Thomas and Lucy Gray of Montana, Melody and Victor Pope of California, and Rye Gray of Carterville; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Paul and Gladys Chancey and Jack and Faye Chancey, all of De Soto and John and Lavon Chancey of Puyallup, one sister, Vivian Anderson of Collinsville; and two sisters-in-law, Maneeta Smith of De Soto and Irene Chancey of New Mexico.

She leaves behind a special friend, Carl Patrick of Hurst, and is preceded by many friends, among them William Watkins, Elma Warren and Lola Richardson, all from Carterville. Esther has many grandchildren: Rick Gray Patty Ann Galloway and her husband Clint, Jeff Lindsey and his wife Lynda, Kenny Warren and his wife Lynn, Kevin Warren, Angela McRoy and husband Neil, Amanda Meadows and husband Andy, Shelley Gray, Sam Gray, Beth Gray, Amelia Gray, Malachi Gray, Magdalene Gray, Carolyn Ollar, Billijo Litton and Bryon Epperheimer. Fifteen great-grandchildren remain: Dustin Galloway, Christy Schronce, Garrett Galloway, Cassie Swayne, Nathan Swayne, Stephanie Swayne, Taryn Lindsey, Cody McRoy, Tiffany McRoy, Tommy Gray, Elizabeth Warren, Emily Warren, Jeremiah Litton and Aidan Litton, and a sister to the Litton boys, due any day. Esther had just recently announced the arrival of a great-great granddaughter, Erin Schronce. Jerry Edwards WEST FRANKFORT Jerry Wayne Edwards, 62, of West Frankfort, died at 11:37 a.m.

Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, in Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Marion. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in First Baptist Church in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Mike Cash officiating.

Burial will be in Boner Cemetery in West Frankfort. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and until 2 p.m. Friday in the church. Military rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 5764 of West Frankfort and the American Legion Post 1961 of Orient.

Union Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Bailey was a homemaker. She was born Oct. 1, 1917, in Strunk, to James and Etta (King) Strunk.

Oredia was Bailey united in marriage with Thomas Kenneth Bailey July 23, 1939, in Cape Girardeau. He preceded her in death Nov. 26, 1999. Surviving are son and daughter-in-law, Thomas J. and Linda M.

Bailey of Herrin; grandson, Thomas Bailey of Herrin; granddaughter, Amber Bailey of Herrin and a brother, Jim Strunk of Marion. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five sisters: Lanta Butkus, Beulah Carnaghi, Emma King, Maude Bradshaw, Carrie Hooker and two brothers, Rob and Oscar Strunk. Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in East Lawn Memorial Gardens in Energy. Thomas J.

Bailey will conduct services. Interment will be in East Lawn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday in Meredith-Waddell Funeral Home in Herrin. David Hortin DU QUOIN Dr.

David W. Hortin, 63, of Ypsilanti, formerly of Du Quoin, died Wednesday, Nov. 2, 2005. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Sunset Memorial Park in Du Quoin, with the Rev.

Cletus Milford Oliver ANNA Cletus Milford Oliver, 86, of Anna, died at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005, in the Union County Nursing Home in Anna. He was born March 12, 1919, in Karnak, the son of Alvin and Bertha Davidson Oliver. He married Nina L.

Hannah Feb. 1, 1945, in Vienna. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Anna. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion.

He was a member of the Operating Engineers Local 318. He retired from the Anna Quarry where he worked as a loader for many years. He is survived by his wife, Nina Oliver of Anna; five children, William H. and wife Nancy Oliver of Waynesboro, Cletus Oliver Jr. of Anna, Alvin L.

and wife Sandi Oliver of Quincy, Laura Ann and husband Warren Wethetford of Clinton, and George G. and wife Lena Oliver of Alto Pass; six grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; one brother, Herschel Oliver of Cypress, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, James, Durrell and Relis Oliver; and a sister in infancy. Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Lutz and Rendleman Funeral Home in Anna, with the Rev.

Clifford Heil officiating. Burial will be in Anna City Cemetery, with full military honors given by the Carroll P. Foster VFW Post 3455. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

to 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Jackson Funeral Home of Carbondale is in charge of arrangements. Grady Ray Dabbs MILL CREEK Grady Ray Dabbs, 76, of Mill Creek, died at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, Nov.

8, 2005, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. He was born March 6, 1929, in Portageville, a son of John and Ethel Anderson Dabbs. He married Imogene Nolan, and she died on Dec. 26, 2002. He worked on small engines and lawnmowers.

He was an ordained minister with Church of God and worshipped at Fellowship of the Cross in Mill Creek. He is survived by six daughters, Linda Turner of Tamms, Patricia Coleson, Janet Dabbs and Sherry Newell, all of Mill Creek, Cathy Klasner of Dongola and Lisa McClellan of Pulaski; two sons, Jerry Dale Dabbs and Randy Dabbs, both of Mill Creek; 25 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter, Carolyn Ray Dabbs; one grandson; one great-grandson; and several brothers and sisters. Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Crain Funeral Home in Tamms, with the Revs.

Lewgene Long and Patricia Coleson officiating. Interment will be in St. John's Cemetery in Dongola. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today in Crain Funeral Home in Tamms.

Jerry Downen WEST FRANKFORT Jerry Ray Downen, 51, of West Frankfort, formerly of Vienna, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2005, at his home. Services will be at 12:30 p.m. today in Mounds City National Cemetery, with the Rev. Wayne Gardner officiating.

There will be no visitation. Those attending are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Billy Joe Davis BELLE RIVE Billy Joe Davis, 18, of Belle Rive, died at 4:41 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, 2005, at his home.

Services will be 11 a.m. today in Gholson Funeral Home in Dahlgren, with the Revs. Jeremy Hamson and Charles McCormick officiating. Burial will be in the Lowrey Hill Cemetery near Dahlgren. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m.

18, 1934, in Johnston City, the son of Cecil C. and Lucille E. (Felts) Casey. He married Jacqueline Marlene (Galyean) Feb. 14, 1953 in Marion.

She survives. Elden first worked as a construction worker, he then retired as a coal miner. He was a member of UMWA and of Buccaneer's Club in Johnston City. He is survived by his mother of Johnston City; four children, Terri Head and husband Mark of Johnston City, Gary Casey of Pittsburg, Sherrie Vanek and husband Bill of Johnston City, and Perry Casey of Johnston City; five grandchildren, Shawndell Casey, Paula Triplett, Dennis Vaughn, Johnny Lee Casey, and Jacqueline Joe Casey; five great-grandchildren, Derek Casey, Shawnice Acree, DeAndre Lacy, Shaylynn Triplett, and Brenna Prior; four step-grandchildren, Melanie Head, Jennie Vanek, Kim Vanek, and William Vanek; three step-greatgrandchildren; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Stewart and husband Bob of Marion; a nephew, Glenn Casey and wife Amy; great-nephews, Brent and Blake Casey; an uncle, Gene Felts and wife Georgia; and several cousins. com Helen S.Outten SPARTA Helen S. Outten, 68, died at 3:03 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at her home. Services will be at 10:30 a.m.

Helen was an initial founding member and organizer of ECHO. Helen had a great love for her family and loved nothing more than getting to spend time with them all. Helen also loved to entertain and have luncheons for her friends. She enjoyed decorating her home and quilting. She was born March 3, 1937 in Peoria to Albert H.

and Alice (Heller) Fisher. Helen married Warner Maddox, and to this union were born three children, Lisa (Steve) Nuelle and Lori (Gary) McBride, both of St. Louis, and Chris (Lisa) Maddox of St. Charles. Helen married Donald T.

Outten on April 3, 1986, and and he survives. With this marriage seven more children were brought into her life: William, Steven, Connie, Teresa, Cathy, Debbie and Barbara. She is also survived by three brothers, Alan Fischer of Massachusetts and Joe Fischer and Jim Fischer, both of Chillicothe; one sister, Fran Weber of Peoria; 16 grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. A boil order has been issued for all of Quillman Road in Du Quoin from Franklin Street on Wells Street to Five Star Industries until further notice because of repair work being done on the lines. A boil order has been issued from the 600 to the 900 block of North 23rd Street and on Borgsmiller Street between 23rd and 24th streets, including the 2300 block of Gartside Street in Murphysboro. The Royalton Street and Fire Department will be flushing hydrants starting Saturday. This could take up to four days. The water will be safe to drink, but may discolor clothes.
