MILLER News Sports Editor If the enthusiasm at last practice continues, then Salem High School is likely to have a successful football campaign. The Quakers went through an Inspired drill in preparation for the opener against a veteran Cleveland Lincoln squad here at Reilly Stadium Friday night at 8. Kenny Zaleski, who acored two touchdowns in the lid-lifter a year ago, is back, along with 13 other lettermen.

Speed, size and experience ahould make the Cleveland aggregation one of the top teams in that city during the aeason. Salem, still hit by a rash of Injuries, displayed plenty of hustle and desire during the workout last night. The blocking looked sharp, and the tackling was hard. The defense has come a long way aince Cooch Don Clarico took over the reins here in 1963. Lincoln split even in scrimmages in its practices.

Reports have it that the Presidents have a powerful running game, and a passer should they want to throw. COACH LOU probable starting lineup is as follows: seniors Ron Ba Paul Trujillo, or John Cwiek, ends; juniors Gary Tytko, and Ed Colaizzi, tackles; Oleh Pletnewski, 200-lb. senior; and Bill Nakoneczny, 175-lb. junior, guards; and Dale Dankowski, 190-lb. senior at center.

Three of last backfield are slated to start for the Presidents. Frank Basso, 150-lb. junior, is set at quarterback. He tossed eight passes against the Quakers as a sophomore and four of them were caught for 102 yards. Slated at the halfback spots for Lincoln are Zaleski, who scored on runs of 26 and six yards a year ago; and Steve Gibala, 185-lb.

senior. Mike Perciado, 190-lb. senior, is the fullback. Should he want to get a lot of weight into the contest, Sawchik has six players he can use that tip the scales at 200-lb. or more.

Salem will hold its tuneup practice from 7 until after 8 tonight. Clarico has made the change in the drill sessions because of the intense heat. PROBABLE STARTERS for Salem are junior Jim Lantz, 162- seniors Jim Miller, or Mike Swetye, 154-lb. at ends; seniors Jack Rea, and Dennis Everhart, tackles; seniors Harold Schramm, and Tom Hutson, 176- guards; and junior Buzz Fisher, 158-lb. center.

Joe Rotrenborn, 155-lb. junior, gets the nod at quarterback, but Tod Chappell, 142-lb. junior, should see considerable action. Dave Fleischer, 148-lb. junior; and Cody Goard, 162-lb.

senior, are set at halfbacks; while Dyer Scott, 174-lb. senior, will be running from the fullback position. Chuck Joseph, sidelined most of the week with a thigh injury, was doing quite a bit of senior is likeiy to see action at fullback. The Packers are generally being picked to dethrone the Chicago Bears in the West, with Baltimore and possibly Detroit and Minnesota challenging. The East looks like a wide scramble among New York, St. Louis and Cleveland, with Washington a long-shot possibility. Despite the 1-4 record in the exhibition games and player shake-ups of earthquake proportions, Allie I Sherman still has the old Bald Eagle and a flock of nifty pass catchers. St.

Louis is the soundest club in the East but they still have to prove themselves under championship fire and may be a bit thin in defense. Cleveland has added passing strength with rookie flanker Paul Warfield to complement Jim running, but something always seems to go wrong. With Sonny Jurgensen, rookie Charley Taylor and veteran Sam Huff in the lineup, Washington is highly respected. the way It looks from here before the opening gun: WESTERN CONFERENCE 1. Green Bay 2.

Philadelphia Paul return after a suspension for betting on games and the driving ambition of Coach Vince Lombardi to make up for last defeats by the Bears should be enough to tip the scales in favor of Green Bay. Big strides in this race will be taken in the first three with Packers playing Chicago, Baltimore and Detroit on successive weekends. The Bears blast anybody off die field but be in there. Tony Lorick looked so good against the Steelers that it is tempting to pick Baltimore higher than third. Johnny Uni- tas has some fine targets but the defense is showing its age. With Alex Karras, like Hornung back from a suspension, formidable defensive unit is intact but a year older. Much depends on Milt arm.

Minnesota, with a perfect 5-0 exhibition record, looks tough with Bill Brown and Tommy Mason approximating Green ground punch of Hornung and Jim Taylor. Los Angeles should beat out San Francisco for sixth place. That Ram front four on defense can give anybody fits. Tittle and the pass-catching corps give the edge to the Giants in the East although Sherman still has no running game and needs settling on defense and pass protection. The Cards have a fine passer in Charley Johnson, brilliant receivers in Sonny Randle and Bobby Joe Conrad and a big punch in Prentice Gautt and Joe Childress.

If they can stop the big running teams like Cleveland and Pittsburgh they can win. Cleveland has improved but must face both Green Bay and Detroit from the other conference. Those small pass defense men still will have trouble. Washington has come up with an exciting runner in Taylor, plus an experienced quarterback, Jurgensen, and more catching skill in Angelo Coia. Huff must help the defense all season for that leaky pass cover has killed the Skins for years.

Pittsburgh has been slow coming around but it has a stiff punch in John Henry Johnson and some tough muscle men up front. Dallas should have the wildest games in the league with Tommy McDonald and Buddy Dial catching and nobody to stop the other side. They have done about all they can for now. Once the players take the field pretty much out of the hands and up to the gridders how they will fare this season. Parents have spent the last days of summer hearing complaints about sore leg and arm muscles, occasional scratches and sometimes loosened teeth. Prognosticators have spent time going over the 1963 marks, checking on who lost what players and which ones are coming back, and trying to guess before the season starts if that bumbling sophomore who played second-string for Podunk High last year will turn out to be the fastest, most daring run ner of the season. And after all the data is in and all the coaches have told them just how great or poor they expect their team to be this year, the game-pickers sit down to make their selections for the first week of area high school grid action.

Last year in our inaugural attempt at this field, we hit on 89 of 119 picks for a not-too- bad .747 per cent. This year we intend to do better, although on paper it appears that the area high school races are more wide-open than last season. But here we go: Louisville over Glenwood. The mighty Leopards, last Tri-County League champs, should have little trouble downing the Canton team by two touchdowns. Lisbon over Carrollton.

Last Lisbon squad had a 9-1 nark and despite serious losses in backfield personnel should be too much for Carrollton, winning by two TDs. East Palestine over Canfield. This is a hard game to pick. Both teams lack a great deal of polish. Bulldogs by one touchdown.

Hubbard over Columbiana. Hubbard has too much all around power for the clippers to compete with, although it should be an interesting contest. Hubbard by one touchdown. Leetonia over United. We ll stick with the Tri-County team by one touchdown.

Minerva over Newton Falls. We know much about Newton Falls, but our touch spy told us to put our money on Minerva, by at least 3 touchdowns. Howland at Sebring. Sebring may escape from the cellar this year and give a lot of teams trouble. Sebring by two points.

McDonald over Orange. Orange? We'll take McDonald bv one TD. Marlington over West Branch. Marlington looked good in scrimmages against both Minerva and Lisbon, so should have little trouble handling West Branch. Marlington by at least two touchdowns.

Southern Local over Greenford. This could be another in teresting match. Southern Loca by one touchdown. Springfield Local over North Lima. North Lima may develop as the year progresses but or Saturday lose by one touchdown.

Lowellville over Western Reserve. No contest. Lowellville by three touchdowns. Mineral Ridge over Cresfc view. Mineral Ridge will make believers of the rebels, Ridge by three tallies.
