Dubbed RUM (for "remote underwater manipulator"), it is essentially a tank with a long jointed manipulat- or arm and hand together with special television cameras. Its purpose is to observe the ocean floor, collect samples and perform other research functions. RUM can operate at depths of 30,000 feet and maintain a speed of three miles an hour.
